Actually, statically and sales of liquor wise, young people drink way less than their parents did in the USA and Korea.

I remember when I first came to Korea all the Hof's on the streets, now many have been replaced by coffee shops.

Just curious, because I happen to work for the company that owns and operates the most well-designed, popular, and "VIP-style" bars/clubs/lounges in Itaewon. If you're really friends with the owner(s) there's a good chance we know each other.

Just curious but I always thought a 'VIP lounge' was a fenced off area in a regular night club set aside for celebrities. Is it a type of nightclub these days?

On the subject of whisky, Johnny Walker in itself does not have the reputation of a luxury brand in the UK but rather as a bog standard mixing whisky. You'd more than likely get it in a pub if you just asked for a Scotch. However in Korea when people want to impress each other they buy the luxury blue and black blended varieties, which cost a lot. I suspect that's mainly the point. I've never actually tried a top of the range blended whisky so can't compare it but I'm with Steelrails on Laphroiag or any other Islay single malt being my choice. Difficult to get hold of in Seoul, though I once saw a bottle in SSG Market.

Aren't foreigners usually c-blocked from those areas? VIP lounges and even those introduction clubs - I just forgot their name. Haven't partied it up much in Seoul lately. So, I'm really ignorant on the whole thing.

They don't "c-block" other foreigners, they don't let anyone in dressed in hobo rags and showing up with their cupcake salary from Toss English. Gotta have the coin to get access to these areas, and when they see IPIC in one of his designer suits and his crew roll up, I go to the FRONT of the line, no questions asked, while the other loser ESL lifers in their hobo rags, going in and out of the club to grab some Cass because they're too cheap to buy a drink, are left giving me dirty looks from the back. ROFL.

Those are the VIP places? How about the places where you get introduced? Booking clubs? I forgot the name yesterday. You go in and get introduced by the bartender for 30,000 won. I never do them because I just meet women out side. It's great when women are happy to meet without the fuss. But, those places are where I use to hear the stories c-blocking. Those are all over Korea, even in my town.

St. Paddy's used to be a day to drink, and drink heartily and warmly, but it morphed into a serious DRUNK fest with people using the slightist bit of Irish affiliation as an excuse to go beserk. Real Irish cringe when they see Americans with an Irish Great grandmother act like complete sots.

The real Irish are the worst drunks on St. Paddy's. A few years ago, my sister was staying at the Shelbourne in Dublin and was doing some work at the Bank of Ireland across the street for a week or so. I was hanging out with her that week when she wasn't at work. In the same area as the hotel, the bank and the parks, there was a big St. Patrick's festival going on. As I walked by it, one drunk guy noticed me and alerted a large group of his drunk buddies by saying, "Look! A Jew hat!" It was actually just a regular skullcap I had bought here in Korea. I was pelted with a bunch of stuff and was chased by the drunk guys, running back to the Shelbourne. I didn't step outside of the hotel until the next day.

Itaewon Saturday Night:

Way more Koreans than foreigners. Itaewon is actually somewhat of a 'zoo' now, and foreigners are basically the 'animals' that Koreans come to see, especially on days like Halloween. Countless Koreans walking around, snapping pictures of foreigners in costume, uploading them to the internet. It's like some sort of weird spectacle for them.

Nothing against adults dressing up in costumes for Halloween; I personally love all of the skanky outfits, and putting on a mask for a night removes inhibitions. It's healthy I think. Adults have been doing it for centuries.

Whereas in the past, (brave) Koreans ventured to Itaewon perhaps to interact with foreigners, nowadays they seem to come to Itaewon to take photos of foreign food, foreigners, foreign restaurants, but with little to no interest in actually interacting with anything "foreign" other than perhaps taking a photo or video of it.

I wonder if HBC will eventually become a tourist zone for Koreans as well?
Perhaps HBC will be the last foreign ghetto, but I have a feeling it will become intensely commercialized over the next decade or so.

Things are getting bizarre in Itaewon. There are guided tours of Koreans, with the guides holding up the flags. You know the ones. They even have classes of Korean children taking trips there to take pics of waygookin. Can you picture the teacher saying "Now, children, this is Homo Hill " ?

Every city in the US will have people of all ages dressed up in costume the weekend before Halloween. It hasnt been just a children's holiday since I can remember. There were plenty of Koreans out there having a good time as well. I dont see how people dressed up (and girls dressed down) is something to complain about. There are some seriously negative people around here.

Agreed. They sound like a bunch of grumpy old losers.

Sorry, I didn't know that so many posters on this site are into morbidly obese 50+ women, drunk as skunks, dressed up like Tinker Bell. If that's your thing then go on with your bad self.

Yeah sounds like what my friends said it was like, I got out of town for the weekend and missed all the fun.

Hate to say it but now that Itaewon is considered "safe" by the Koreans to go to I feel like a zoo animal when I go over there. Also HBC is fast becoming like that too. Swear at the HBC Fest there were almost as many Koreans taking pics of the "foreigner animals" as there were foreigners acting like idiots

Itaewon is classified as a "Special Tourist Zone for Foreigners." I now finally understand what that means.Very Happy

Having bottles and other objects whizzing by your head as you're being chased by a pack of irrationally violent strangers will do it to you. Calling it a night early wasn't as socially inept as being out as a minority while a street festival of drunkenness was occurring. It was like Reginald Denny merrily strolling through the streets of South Central LA during the riots, tempting fate.

First of all, far too many people in Itaewon last night. I personally dislike crowds and last night was just insane. What made it all the more annoying was all the "adults" dressed up in costumes. Halloween is for kids! You are not children. You should have outgrown playing dress up a long ago. When I see someone all done up for halloween I just think it's pathetic. You don't look cute or interesting - you look like a retard. If you want to get in the spirit of the day, stay home and rent a scary movie. I can hear the attacks now. "You're a killjoy." "You have no sense of fun." "You're a dickhead." Wrong (at least on the first two counts). My sense of fun is watching kids go by dressed up for halloween. They're adorable. It's their day. But to still be doing it thirty years later is just retarded.

Back home would you still go out trick or treating? Of course not. Why? Because it's for friggin' children.

Rolling Eyes Loser.

And... stop 'watching' kids?

P.S. Adults THE WORLD over dress up for Halloween. If you 'could hear the insults now' maybe don't post at all?
