| When the Olympics is on, see how much coverage (what we consider to be ) minor sports get unless GB win a medal. |
Actually, BBC coverage of the Olympics is usually quite good. Of course, we concentrate on our own team's success, but we do not discount other teams also. Moreover, when England play at football you do not get the BBC not replaying the other teams goals like in Korea. |

This is completely OT but it struck me there's something of a parallel here with the attitudes of the English and Irish. The English press will happily adopt Irish or Scottish teams or athletes if England aren't in the running but not vice versa.
|
Absolutely. I think its normal for nations/peoples who have been repressed, occupied, generally trodden on to be bitter towards their enemy/occupier and national sport is the only forum where they can vent their frustrations.
I'm sure any Englishman who's lived in Wales can see the media parallel's between Korean and Welsh coverage. In the week after beating England at rugby the bbc once had Kelly Jones singing "As long as we beat the English" in the break between the 1 O'clock news and neighbours. Imagine that the other way round... |

I always regret Hadrian ran out of bricks for that second wall. |

| [quote="Swiss James"]Is not remembering it the best you've got? The comparison is valid because someone from one country went to compete in another country, and suddenly people cared about how their boy was getting along abroad. |
Not to the extent that his expolits were getting slots in the main news segments on the 6 o'clock news.
I read your post too quickly. I thought you had written 'there is nothing wrong with them showing the......" My apologies.

I was indeed refering to the domestic news companies such as SBS. They often show an Lee Yong Pyo run as part of their main news segment. (not part of the sports section). A bit like this,
- Today in Iraq three bombs went off killing 6 American marines.
- Next. Lee Young Pyo went on a mazy run and was given an 8 out of 10 by skysports for his performance against West Ham on Saturday. (6 replays of the run follow) |

it's just as well though, because you know at work the next day someone's going to say
"Did you see Lee Young Pyo last night?"
and expect me to have an opinion on it |

Tell them: "Sorry, but I don't follow baseball." |

People complain about the lack of coverage here about other team matches etc.
Remember England is in the EU, and satellite TV covers all Europe, so any broadcaster there would include even coverage. The French are watching British TV, the Brits can watch Spanish TV.... it's a huge melting pot.
You can't blame Koreans for their geographical situation which in turn is seen to apply to their psychology. |

Well, it's not as if South Korea is totally isolated. Koreans could watch Japanese coverage...well, err...Yeah, people shouldn't complain about the lack of coverage! |

haha... you give europeans too much credit.
The French watching the British TV and the Brits watching Spanish TV? Most Brits only speak English, and folks in other EU states like Germany don't have any interest in watching their televison shows in Italian or English anytime soon. |
