Has RTeacher piped in yet about all the bad karma these carniverous beasts are gaining through such horrid behavior? In 1,000 lifetimes perhaps they too can be enlightened cud-chewers. Wink

Thanks for the excellent contributions. A thread on rock-hard animals is always going to be a big hit, especially with the gentlemen.

Fab link there, Billybrobby. The lion appeared to beat the bear 'on points' I feel. The lion was just by far the quickest, fearsome opponent, although the bear is very difficult to beat, let alone kill.

Speaking of lions, we all love those cute, gorgeous little cubs on the wildlife documentaries, right? Well hyenas are just so unspeakably evil that a pack of them will often prey on a cub that's lagging behind the rest of the family or is vulnerable in some way, savagely ripping poor baby apart.

By "toughest", to answer that query, that can mean anything the poster wants. I'd like to mention the Funnelweb spider from Australia (chiefly New South Wales). It's quite simply a truly nasty piece of work.

The Sydney Funnel-Web Spider is one of the world's most deadly spiders, carrying an atraxotoxin, one of the world's most dangerous toxins. the mature male funnel-web spider will wander around during hot humid nights, looking for a mate, and is known to enter homes, footwear, clothing, washing and swimming pools (where they can survive several days under water). It is highly aggressive when disturbed or cornered and is able to inflict multiple bites, with its "flick-knife" hardened fangs.

The Australian Redback spider also carries a deadly bite. The pain around the bite area can be absolutely excruciating. The Redback is often tiny, the size of pea.

Being born in Australia, I have heard stories that the funnel web bites so hard that it can puncture through your fingernail. Truely disturbing.

In my younger days, I was once surfing of Stradboke Island (island of the coast of Queensland) at dusk, which is not a particularly smart idea as most people know sharks are prone to feed at this time. Anyway, I didn't encounter anything in the water, the session finished without incident.

But, the next day I was walking along the rocky point right in front of the place that I was surfing the previous day. I got into a conversation with a fisherman and I asked him if he had seen any sharks recently. Normally rock fisherman are there for the long haul and can usually witness this kind of thing.

Then what he said next nearly floored me. He said that the previous day at dusk he was watching a surfer riding a small wave and there was a 10-15 foot shadow, most likely a shark, following the surfer.

I proceeded to ask him what that particular surfer was wearing - he said a dark green wetsuit, the same wetsuit I had been wearing the day before. It had been following me. There was a few other surfers with me that day, but from what I could remember, I was the only guy with that matching wetsuit.

Australia strikes me as being a rather inhospitable place.
