| I didn't say that I was 150 lbs., I was referring to a woman who wrote a previous thread. We were discussing unsolicited comments from strangers about weight, not the scientific definition of obesity. |

First of all, people are jerks in every country, not just Korea. You should hear some of the rude comments about my physical appearance that I've gotten in California - the most superficial place I've ever lived in my entire life. I've heard some interesting things said to myself and to acquaintances by total strangers in several other different countries and I'm pretty sure that people with big mouths are a cross-cultural problem. It's not always a weight issue, but a woman's physical appearance seems to be a subject for discussion everywhere. I've heard rude comments said to people about their breast size, skin tone, hair texture, acne, choice of clothing... Sometimes men get these comments as well  .
So, I kind of agree with the OP that maybe the world would be a better place if we all started talking back when someone talks smack to us, but I wouldn't file this problem specifically under Korean cultural differences. I'm sure that there are cultural variations to how blunt people think it's acceptable to be about these things, but if people could see their own culture from the outside they might be shocked at how rude they can be to people who don't fit the norm.
In answer to the question, then, I would initially say to respond however you feel like it because I don't see this as a cultural thing at all. But then again, not only is there the 'weight issue' and the 'rude people issue' coming into play, but the fact that we're foreigners abroad and so we're supposed to somehow be more respectful. I used to believe that I had to put up with everything so as not to be seen as a rude American, but after a few years I got fed up and starting mouthing off a lot. To my surprise I've found that people seem to respect me more, and, dare I say, even like me more than before. So now I'm inclined to say that if you don't want to be treated like a foreigner then don't act like one. Just be yourself. But then again it would be helpful to hear from more people actually in Korea about this idea... |

| I was talking to my fiance (Korean) last night about a teacher from my school who occasionally gets grabbed or followed by K-men. The teacher is quite slim. Apparently people here have the idea that all female English teachers are fat. So this woman being slim must make her a *beep*. |

Back on topic: I have met Q twice now, and she isn't THAT much bigger than the average Korean girl. Butt ugly though. |
