| Since you're in Thailand, why do you think homosexuality is so permissive in Thailand? I figured it's 'cuz Thais don't care what other people get up to. I wonder what the percentage is of heterosexual men to homosexual men in Thailand.... |
From what I have heard, the permissiveness here derives from that cultural font of wisdom- Buddhism. Buddhism itself, at least according to recent reports from the Dalai Lama, doesn't condone homosexuality, but it doesn't comdemn anything. The prohibition on homosexuality derives from interpretations of the precept of "right action". This is an arguable point, but rather mute, as, like I said, Buddhism doesn't go around condemning people for their actions.
To put it simply, you are exactly right, Thais, as Buddhists, don't care what other people get up to. But there is a sizable Muslim population here, especially in the South, and, as we know, the Muslim fundamentalists do care what people get up to. It will be interesting to see how that one plays out, but there sure are conflicts here. |

Never been better. Wouldn't trade this time of life for a younger body, not unless I could bring along the brain and memories I have right now ... and the love life, just fine - again, the best I've experienced so far, in case you were wondering ... |
After reading this, I hadn't felt this dirty since my grandfather got drunk and starting talking about his love life with my grandmother
please tone it down a bit. There could be children reading |

So, I have wondered, why is mature sex such a threatening thought? Media saturation with sexual images of only young people has desexualized mature adults. You can believe your grandparents are having dirty sex- maybe even on the dining room table where you have Sunday dinner- especially in the age of viagra and multiple marriages. Do you know that AIDS and other STDs are a problem in nursing homes? Apparently the old guys really get some action, as there are so many women and so few men.
I often wonder why age has become such a threat to younger people. Wonderful, strange, and not so great things all come with age. It is just a part of life, and, if you are fortunate, you will get to experience it.
Carry on, Bobster. Someday the kids will know what you know, and then they will be the fortunate ones.
Oh, and yes, there are probably "children" reading- from what I have seen of some of the discussions on this board. |

My Grandmother worked up until she was in her eighties. She was a dorm mother at a women's college in South Carolina. I think that kept her feeling young and energetic. She was a lot of fun.
I hope my retirement plan includes working that long. I worry that I would lose my energy or get bored if I stopped.
Do you plan on quitting working, or will you keep it up as long as possible?
Does the idea of death looming it's creepy head scare you?
(ps. Would you be willing to post a picture of yoursef on the bikini thread?) |

Hey, I may also settle down in Chiang Mai some day (that's also the city where Dave Sperling got his first taste of EFL at Chiang Mai University...)
Of course, the town might not be big enough for the both of us... |

I can't imagine doing what is considered "retiring". I am happiest when I am being useful and interested in what I am doing.
My chances of dying any time soon are probably the same as yours (well, except that I plan to do about 30 hours of flying next week ). I have good health, and there is longevity in my family. So my concerns with death are pretty minimal. But, when I go to visit my father, I am more acutely aware of time and mortality. Philosophically, as a sort of Buddhist, I do try to be aware of my own mortality and general inconsequence in the universe.
No, no pic on the bikini thread. On Dave's, tops are required. |
