About iron testing: Any medical doctor can do these kinds of tests, but I think you have to be very active in requesting them -- I wish I'd found that PCRM info a lot earlier.
Also, I chose to take the supplements as an absolute last resort, because I was really low on iron and couldn't function without some sort of treatment -- but iron supplements can be very harmful if you don't really need them, so it's much better to get iron from beans and leafy vegetables. As far as I'm aware, most vegetarians and vegans have no trouble getting enough iron this way, but I really neglected myself and got very run down. Better to avoid getting into that situation, if you can -- by eating fruits, vegetables (including broccoli and bok choy), beans, whole grains, and maybe some molasses. That's what I'm trying to do now, but it's still hard.
