Here is the opinion of a Pakistani immigrant to Canada.
Quote:

I am a first generation Canadian from Pakistan who used to support multiculturalism. I believed it gave us a sense of pluralism, diversity and a variety of cultural and social customs.

Now I believe it is not working.

Over the years, I have appreciated the Canadian system of accommodating people from around the world. But I also notice a lack of assimilation.

I don't expect newcomers to integrate to the extent of converting to Christianity. I don't preach total amalgamation of subcultures, but it is the responsibility of minority groups to assimilate to the Canadian culture.

That is missing in today's Canada. It's time we challenged our government to take a second look at official multiculturalism. It has created ghettos in cities, and this has caused a major obstacle to our unity. The hyphenated Canada suffers from divided loyalties.

In our secular society, we do not mix religion and politics. Therefore, we must not tolerate fundamentalists of any religion. Those who feel their homeland is better should go back.

Canada must not let ethnic groups create problems for our justice system by fighting governments in their homelands. If they have issues back home, they should go back and fight from within.

As a Muslim, I'm irritated by Season's Greetings, not Merry Christmas. We're obsessed with political correctness.

I'm not defending vulgarities. I'm simply suggesting too much political correctness hinders communication. In lectures, I can't use some words to make a point because of multiculturalism.

We're afraid of offending some minorities. I wish we had a common code of ethics in Canada. I wish we all -- old and newcomers -- loved to be Canadians, not hyphenated Canadians.

The best example of multiculturalism is Quebec in relation to the rest of Canada. It is now a nation within a united Canada. Alberta is also talking about a special place in Canada.

We have many First Nations in Canada. And we have numerous hyphenated ethnic groups in Canada. All of this makes us members of multicultural Canada. Why can we not be just Canadians?

Canada does not beg people to come here, and does not stop people if they want to leave.

Therefore, they must be loyal to Canada. But multiculturalism gives them hyphenated status, which discourages their commitment to Canada.

All Canadians must pledge their allegiance to Canada. Nobody must be allowed to dilute our sovereignty and fracture our nation.

WE STAND ON GUARD

Canada is more important than any one part, be it an ethnic, racial or religious group. It does not matter how people did things before; here, we stand on guard for Canada, not for countries they came from.

Multiculturalism threatens Canada. Multiculturalism and political correctness hurt the Canadian identity.

It makes Canada a country of wimps.

Let's identify people for who they are, and not hide behind political correctness.

The policy of multiculturalism is a disaster. It allows people to marginalize themselves. It allows people hanging in the balance.

Therefore, we should change the policy of multiculturalism.

This argument particularly, but many of his arguments (generally) don't seem quite specific enough to address the problems in Canada specifically. I think to REALLY make his point, the author should have done a bit more "compare and contrast" between Canada and the US or another country which doesn't espouse "multiculturalism".

I highlighted this point specifically b/c of this whole idea of "ghettoization" (a word?) seems like a poor choice of words.

Many foreigners in countries like to live around their "own kind". It seems more a natural fact. By NO means are immigrants in Canada "forced" into ghettos; they choose to live near people with whom they share a bond and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
