Very simplistic. Why has China won so many medals and India only one gold in its whole history? Both a huge, poor countries growing very fast economically.

The answer is that the Olympics has been seized upon, as usual, by an authoritarian goverment as an opportunity to solidify its power base, promote economic growth, reinforce an ideology (Market leninism) and polish the collective national erection. The complete polticisation of the Olympic concept in China is the most obvious feature of the 2008 games.

The Olympics are finished, unless someone stops this rot.

Look at the Chinese "women" gymnasts. Here is a quote out of a SI/CNN article:

Quote:
And we do mean young. Their passports are issued by a Chinese government that is very, very interested in winning lots and lots of gold medals, so while they may say they're 15 or 16, five of the six team members have the appearance of pre-pubescent children. "The little babies," is how U.S. coach Martha Karolyi refers to the Chinese gymnasts when speaking to her team, and they certainly are little. Li Shanshan (16) is 4-foot-9, 79 pounds. Yang Yilin (15) is 4-foot-11, 77 pounds. He Kexin (16) is 4-foot-8, 73 pounds. Jiang Yuyuan (16) is 4-foot-7, 71 pounds. But the prize goes to Deng Linlin (16), who's listed at 4-foot-6 and a strapping 68 pounds. She could take a nap in Yao Ming's sneaker. Poor thing's also missing a tooth. Please, someone send baby food.

Did China gear up for these games by deciding to dominate shooting and weightlifting? I know they want to try and win the total medal count battle, being the host country and all, so it seems like they have really concentrated at killing the competition in these events. As of today they have a total of 14 medals combined in those event, 10 of those medals being gold.

found it interesting that the Korean commentators were talking about how they were robbed in the last individual mens gymnastics by a referee, and that the guy was having a great round and going to finally get the gold he deserved.
then they didnt even make it into the rankings.
was it really necessary to talk about the issue of the last games like that??
seems like Karma

Angry Swede throws down medal and quits

BEIJING (Reuters) - Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian threw down his Olympic bronze medal in protest on Thursday after his bid for greco-roman gold was ended by a decision denounced by the Swedish coach as "politics".

Abrahamian took the bronze from around his neck during the medal ceremony, stepped from the podium and dropped it in the middle of the wrestling mat then walked off.

"I don't care about this medal. I wanted gold," he said.

Does anyone know a good place/site/channel for watching the Olympics on? If so, please share. We're getting very good coverage of every event with Korean participation, endless repeats of their golds, a bit of Phelps and very little else. I want to see some track and field!!! Not to mention cycling!

Well, it depends on how you look at it. Are you counting the number of gold medals or total medals won?

If you're counting gold medals, Japan is ahead 7-6, but if you're counting ALL medals, Korea is ahead 19-17.

China is ahead in gold, but the US is ahead in total medals.

Guess it's where you're from that determines which one you choose.

Well, there's no question really. The medal table is decided by the number of golds first. Silver and bronze are achievements but consolation prizes, all the same.
