I'm a smoker and I try to be considerate. I don't smoke around children. I don't smoke around pregnant women. I don't smoke at a table full of nonsmokers. I don't smoke inside my own apartment. I blow my smoke away from others, and I try to stand downwind from people so my smoke doesn't blow into them.
I am conscious about where and how I smoke so after i've done the 50 mental checks before lighting up, I would appreciate a nice polite "Excuse me" if my smoking is bothering you.
What I don't need is some snide comment, some rude remark, or an angry shout. You do those things, I WILL PURPOSELY blow my smoke in your face or make sure you are bothered by my smoking as much as possible.
If you politely ask, from one human being to another, that my smoking is bothering you, I would apologize and put it out, or go someplace else.
Most smokers will do the same. End of thread. Case Closed. This can now be finished. |

On a recent trip to Canada I was "impressed" ((and I put hat in quotations for a reason)) with the smokers I knew. They would duck away from the kids/families/conversation, and have their smoke off to the side. And while I find the habit disgusting, their behavior gave me no reason to take offense.
Coming back to Korea it's a different matter - cigarette butts all over the ground, smokers standing in front of office buildings, smokers smoking on the toilet, smokers smoking in the stair well, smokers smoking in restaurants with no clear signage (yet making their own ashtrays), smokers smoking in restaurants that are non smoking, smokers smoking in buildings that are clearly marked non-smoking.
Perhaps it's a country thing, I don't know. But the attitudes of some of the posters on this thread are very reflective of the attitudes of smokers I see daily in Korea - inconsiderate. |

So please, why do you continue to go to places that have smoking and smokers if you find the act so disgusting and the people so discourteous? |
Because one of these places is called my apartment...where I live. People are smoking in the lobby or the second story floor almost on a daily basis. |

You don't smoke. That person does. This is not rude, this is semantics. There is nothing more rude about 1 out of 10 people smoking than 9 out of 10 people smoking. The act is the same -- that is to say, completely normal. Your obscure hatred of smoke is what is abnormal. Your shock at encountering smoke in a bar is even more abnormal.

So you can't smoke outside, either? Perhaps you can only smoke on desert islands? Perhaps it is you who should visit a desert island to escape this horrible fiendish habit. After all, the problem isn't external but internal.

| In fact, unless you're 100% certain that your cigarette smoke isn't assaulting someone, don't light up at all. |
It's those darn military-style style assault cigarettes that cause all the problems! Assaulting people? Are you kidding me? You know what assaults me? Short people. Short people assault my eyesight.

| We constantly complain about how mannerless Koreans can be, and with good cause. But the one area in which my fellow expats never fail to disappoint me is in their lack of smoking etiquette. Are you as inconsiderate in other aspects of your lives? Or in just this area? And if just in this one area, why? Enlighten me. |
Here is your enlightenment: Grow up. Unless you have an obscure allergy, it's all in your head. I'm a former smoker. I don't like smoking. But it is a normal part of everyday life. Car exhaust is worse. How inconsiderate are people who drive cars! And buses, mass transit just belches black smoke right next to the sidewalk where people are walking! |

For some obscure reason, you used the word obscure twice. |

| Smokers don't realize the bad aspects of their smoking. When I became a non-smoker I realized the disgusting smell. Smokers lose their sense of smell. And taste for that matter. |

Every cigarette I smoke, is 1 less cigarette a young teenager can smoke.
Whereas you nonsmokers, how are YOU helping to curb youth smoking?
*Disclaimer: This post is entirely tongue in cheek. However, it is highly likely people will still quote it and take it out of context. |
