too much cleanliness is NOT a good thing. look at singapore for example. a souless tourist hotspot full of overweight bankers who think they own the world.

anywho, i like japan in general. it's utterly shocking how you can get some of the best beer you will ever find in a convenient store for around 2 dollars a bottle (grand kirin for those of you who get the chance to go to japan http://blogs.c.yimg.jp/res/blog-ea-f9/p_no_kimochi/folder/330725/97/34473197/img_0), while you can only find shit and overpriced shit at that in korea. i can't imagine it'd be too hard to import grand kirin or any other amazing japanese beer over here even if it raised the cost by double, a price i'd gladly be willing to pay.

also, roppongi is awful, the subway system was designed by 17 angry argumentative chimps from different clans and the doors on taxis in osaka open and close by themselves which is pretty neat.

Agreed. I love Japanese beer.

Simple Kirin Ichiban or Asahi Super Dry are better than anything offered in Taiwan, Thailand, Korea or China - Tsing Tao, Taiwan Beer, HITE, Singha, Chang, etc. They are all garbage.

And like someone has already mentioned, the hangovers are not even normal. It's like these beers are all pumped full of chemicals that send the body into some wicked shock like state the next day. Nasty, nasty beers.

What I also like are the micro-brews that are popping up over here now.

In Tokyo, I recently visited Devil Craft in Kanda and Brew Dog in Rappongi. Rappongi generally sucks, but you should check out the selection of micro beers at Brew Dog if you get a chance. Pricey, but many good beers to be enjoyed.

When I have drank soju, I've ended up with a wicked body-stone hangover and sick for not only most of the next day but even feeling crook the day after. It's a truly wicked drink.

Yup.

Let's put it this way: I did my time in college with some experimental times substance-wise, yet in terms of next day effects and overall damage (body and brain) NONE of them compared to the evil drink that is soju. There is something seriously wrong in that drink. I can handle hard alcohol but it generally takes me 2-3 days to fully recover from soju. Never again.

And Korean "beer" seems to just be a weaker version of the chemical concoction they use in soju. Nasty hangovers even from small amounts.

Japanese beer, by contrast, is always a pleasurable experience.

LOL. That's exactly how I would describe a soju hangover. It takes me a couple days to get over it. I always feel like I have the flu the day after. I'd like to try those micro brews you're talking about.
