natey,

Up to a point.
However, even in an internet forum there is a line. If a person calls any ethnic group 'uncivilized' then thats racist. That holds true on a board and in real life conversation.
In theory, you could even make the point that people on here benefiting from relative anonymity let their true selves out, and say things that they think but could not say in publiv because of shame.

In the end, I did not call Osangrl a bigot. I just questionned her reaction and her resorting to violence.

She should have gone to the manager.
Her excuse here is that her Korean was not good enough (her konglish she said) and that the manager speaks no English (an assumption...maybe a good one but still an assumption).
However, she had mentionned that other people in her line were angry. Now logically these people must have been Korean...they could have helped out.
Instead she threw a fit and tossed a basket at the cashier.
What did that solve?

Although the store's policy is very questionable, I don't think an assault is the best way to show your displeasure with it. I agree with others, that a visit to the store manager's office would have been more appropriate. If the store manager couldn't speak English, maybe a Korean friend could acompany you at a later date. Korean classes might be a good investment too. Learn the basics for that situation and you would find it a lot more empowering than throwing things at cashiers. I will teach you a useful phrase, "dam dang Ja hante bul pyong ha go ship a yo" It means, "I want to complain to the person in charge". Or "bul byong hal ga a yo." It means "I will complain". I find that situations such as this are more than enough motivation for me to learn Korean.

A 'considerate Korean': now there's an oxymoron. Not that they're all obtuse, by any means, but in the course of an average day here, one can encounter any number of situations that validate the image of Koreans as rude and thoughtless. The lack of peripheral vision and the equal lack of a sense as to where their body ends and someone else's begins is thoroughly frustrating for a Westerner. They can get away with bashing into each other in this land, but when they try to take their lack of manners overseas, they are reviled for that behavior.

You verified that they do take these "behaviors" overseas of course.
Conducted observations? Surveys?

Oh man....I just wanted to let everyone know that similar thing happened to me on numerous occasions at Goodwill, Walmart, ValueVillage, etc. Of course, they were not Koreans, but low-wage workers who were fed up with being underpaid and undervalued. Shit happens everywhere, but it does not mean that you also have to be rude/obnoxious to people.

Here is another thing: What gives you the right to call people bigots? . What people post on forums does not make people bigots.
? Your opinons are respected but calling people bigots is going too far.

What gives him or anyone else the right is when people post inflamatory and hateful things.

What people post on forums can make others call them bigots. Let's say I started calling certain minorities certain racial slurs. IF I did that I am sure that I would get a few "bigots" thrown my way.

When people ARE acting like bigots then it is time to call them on it.

And Harin that is probably the best post (in my humble opinion) that I have seen from you. Yes "beep happens everywhere". Unfortunately some people will (and have in this thread) claim that it only happens here.
