I still can't get over how absolutely terrible the weather is here. God-awful. I hear students tell me sometimes how much they love the rain, but I know it's a lie (defense mechanism). |

The guns aren't real. I had a friend who worked at a bank and I asked her about it. Hmm... she also used lifts to make herself look taller. |

The society here reminds me of Yeltsin's administration in Russia. It's South Korea after all.
1 step forward 4 steps backwards. |

someones had enough of this place.
change your attitude. I have plenty of korean friends and I find them similar to my friends back home. Koreans don't lie to me. why do you think that is? do you think i'm just lucky? nope. |

seoul has the worst weather i've ever seen. extreme summers/winters spring and fall last a week tops. worst rain in 20 years, worst rain in 100 years two weeks later.
i haven't ruled out being a lifer, but if I go that route I'm definitely not doing seoul forever. |

One reason not to use an ATM! Exemplifies the backwardness of the country while being cute as hell - innocence.

it's a cultural thing. i accepted it a long time ago.
still shocking, though.
(btw, they do lie to you. trust me.) |

I assume you mean in matter of 'face'. Culturally speaking it's acceptable for them to lie in order to save someone's 'face' (or their own) |

The types of lies are the big issue for me.
The "Saving face" type of lie so they aren't embarassed: "oh my friend told me the movie started at 8pm." They just accidently got the times wrong. No big deal-we all "save face" from time to time.
The "I don't want to deal with a foreigner" type of lie: "No, we don't do that here" and you have had the service done there every month for the past two years.
The "I don't mean a thing I'm saying, but I don't want any conflict" type of lie: "Oh yes, If you teach 10 classes a day this month, you'll have a better schedule next month"
And Finally, The "I'm lying to your face to make my life easier" type of lie:
"Yes, you can absolutely have December off" Then in November "Sorry, we're too busy, you can't take December off"
You get my drift! |

I'm reading a big book about the Korean War. I'm at the beginning, before the North invaded. The book focuses on the American (mis)administration of South Korea beforehand.
it stresses no American knew anything about Korea, Koreans, and Korean culture. (no surprise here)
it also repeats at various intervals how 99% of all Americans hated being in Korea, hated the country and everything about it and just wanted to get out.
(this is before the war mind you). Which they did (get out) and set the stage for the Kim Sung Il attack a year later.
this is in stark contast with Japan , where Americans got along quite well with the Japanese and enjoyed their lives there.
