You don't know Steelrails very well.
Here is an abbreviated list of subjects of which SR thinks he knows a lot about:
Aviation
Sports
Britian
Living in the hood
Living in rural areas
Living in Korea
The application of cosmetics in humid climates
Food trends
The Catholic Church
Racism
He would rather spout off about something he knows nothing about than shut his trap. Why? I don't know.
Like in the thread where someone posted a meme with Buster from Arrested Development and SR used it as an excuse to to rebuke the poster for not caring enough about his mother, until everyone told him it was from a famous sitcom.
Here are two phrases you will never hear Steelrails say:
"I don't know" and especially "I was wrong". |

I always got the impression that he was the resident expert on all of those things from his posts.
Come to think of it, you might be onto something. I don't recall ever seeing an admittance to either of those.
Are you sure about all of this? I feel betrayed now. |

First, my parents owned their own airplane. I think I know more about aviation than anyone else on this board unless there is an ex-pilot out there.
Second, I'm sure there are legions of posts from you, or byrddogs, or say, atwood, with those words. You guys admit to ignorance and mistakes left and right.
Lastly, if I am wrong in any of those you are free to point out. But just saying "You're such a know it all" without offering any factual counterpoints is just ridiculous. For example the cosmetics in hot weather thing was a blindingly obvious answer, but rather than admit to that and say "I don't know" or "I was wrong" a few haters decided to just go with the "You're such a know it all". You don't have to know it all to have some common sense.
But you're right, I don't know much about Arrested Development. |

He has psychological issues. He literally can't admit he's wrong. Which is unfortunate. |

That's hurtful. I thought we had made some kind of bond as of late. I had started to see your crusades in a different light. I don't know so much anymore.
My family too has owned planes and several are former pilots. We are from central FL, so I get the cosmetics thing. I was feeling a connection on these things alone. Do you like dogs? I do. Maybe that is something else we have in common.
Hopefully for the sake of the board you will overcome the doubters and continue on spreading the good word. |

I obviously have my disagreements with Steelrails (one of which he just mentioned), but I've found he generally considers my point and tries to engage in some degree of productive reasoning with me. I can remember us coming to something of an agreement on the topic of smoking bans some time back for example, wherein he started seemingly against bans, and eventually concluded that limited local bans were reasonable. On the other hand, when it's been clear our conversation was not heading towards consensus I've generally found it easy enough to finish the conversation with no lingering resentment at all.
I also really like his posts about history. |

If we did get that room, would you come along my dear Scorpion? It would make for a joyous occasion if we could all just get together and air out our differences and become great pals. |

I'll readily admit that SR knows his stuff when it comes to history. I would defer to him on all things military especially. I genuinely think he would make a good history teacher. He can take complex historical processes and disassemble them in a simple and interesting way. And this is coming from a history major.
But he would argue with his own shadow. He thinks he is providing some service here by calling people out. But a lot of the time he's just being an argumentative wally for the sake of it.
I'll never forget the thread about why Koreans look in the mirror so much. He would not accept it. Then he started pulling the most ridiculous excuses out of his ass, clutching at straws. Before that I was on the fence about him. After that I realised he was either a troll or he had some sort of bitterness going on and couldn't accept any kind of comment against Korea. |

But don't you feel that the board deserves this service? The NETs (or we) that have any negative opinion about the place should just suck it up and deal with it, say, like guests/immigrants in other countries without ever complaining. It would be a lot easier that way, right? |

I'll assume you are playing devil's advocate, but yes I agree we should just suck it up. I do. On a daily basis. How could you live here if you didn't?
I sucked it up when the adjosshi taxi driver laid on the horn as were dropping my heavily pregnant sister in law off outside her apartment yesterday. Becuase I wanted to ring his fucking neck. I didn't though. I sucked it up.
I'd say a certain percentage of posts here are blatantly anti-korea, racist, bashing for bashings sake. Certainly not the majority.
Take a look at this site for immigrants to NZ http://e2nz.org/
Vitriol. Hate. In fact they delete any pro-nz post. I'm sure there are thousands of sites for all of our countries. People like to vent. Sometimes people go too far. Then Steelrails swoops in with his terrible analogies and cries of racisim. But he shouldn't kid himself as though this is some sort of stormfront styled hate site. It's pretty restrained for the most part. |

Funny how so many threads turn into a Steelrails bash. He does it to himself though and deserves most of what he gets: his posts are mostly a stream-of-conscious spew-fest of bad analogies and hypocritical screeds against anything he perceives as anti-Korean.
Basically, Korea and Koreans get a free pass on just about everything, even if it's the exact same behaviors in question. Huge double standard on anything Korean related.
As such, it's important to remember his position will automatically change based on this. If it was a similar situation where Korea was the home country and Russia charged Korea with corrupt judging, he'd be taking the opposite argument or at least discounting it in some way, regardless of evidence. He would of course deny this but the pattern is obvious.
The 'service' he 'provides' here is of him thinking he's on the moral high road and an authority of all subjects, wether he knows anything about it or not. And if he doesn't know anything about something, he'll INVENT a random story or analogy and somehow try to make it stick as though that were the final word on the matter. If you throw enough crap against the wall, some of it is bound to stick, but let's not forget the massive pile of crap that slides onto the floor.
That said, this site wouldn't be the same without him; let's hope he's at least getting paid by Dave's and/or the Korean government for all his efforts and laughing all the way to the bank.
And, I wasn't rooting for Yuna to lose in any way and she maybe should have gotten a higher score, but when she got the silver, for better or worse the Korean reaction was fairly predictable. It will be interesting to see the "payback" come the next winter olympics. |

This is one of my all time favorite SR gems of a post. Dude's self-esteem is off the charts. |

Leave SteelRails alone! He is the only thing that's good and pure about this forum (now that PatrickBusan doesn't show up anymore)! |

He still hasn't recovered from Yuna not having won gold. He's finding it hard to get out of bed in the morning. When he does he just lays about on the couch watching reruns of Yuna's performance. His letter to her, informing her that she is still the queen of his heart, has been written and re-written a hundred times. The words have to be just perfect, like her performance. But don't worry folks, he'll be back in time. He just needs some time to heal. I suggest we all give him some space. This hasn't been easy for him. |
