Hmmm my opinions on the whole thing as a western chick?

I'm not surpised by the whole mess. Korea has a pretty well deserved shoddy reputation in the ESL scene for dodgy teachers. While most of the teachers I've met here are generally good natured economic refugees or those trying to escape the corporate lifestyle back home. Then there is the group of people that are here for reason: because they can't function back home.

While the mildest form of socially retarded westerners are the charisma men things go down hill rapidly from there to the alcoholics, people with minor mental illnesses, people with major mental illnesses and criminals. Provided that they're white all of them can eventually get a job here teaching english, largely to kids. Some of them made there way online and thus we have the current situation.

In perfect world both sides of Korean ESL will stand back and look at what got us into this mess. Teachers will realise that their actions always have a reaction on others and thus think before they act. The korean side might want to start looking at who they are letting into classrooms.

But in the end I think in the end the whole thing will blow over, but things aren't going to be as sweet as they were before hand.

Was there ever an anti-foreigner like this in Taiwan or Japan?

Funny that you should mention this, as I have Taiwan's Forumosa forums in another browser and was just reading about their own scandal in their ESL industry involving a alleged pedo in the classroom, and it has ignited some anti-foreigner heat.
http://forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopic.php?t=28833

Further down the list, they also have a big thread that's been going on longer than the existence of our current board, about the public perception about the credibility of teachers and fake degree issues, too.

We need to hunt down those "Uncle Toms" and kill them.

Bruno seems to have got what was coming to him. Who's next?

Being a socially retarded Charisma Man with a drinking problem who has never broken the law (unless jaywalking and watching pornos that actually show male and female naughty bits counts) and who used to teach with both gusto and pizzazz, I take issue with this statement.

PS - you forgot "overweight food addicts trying to detox on kimchi and bean sprouts," "deadbeat mothers and fathers," and "peeple hoo can't spael, and kan't yoos grammer or punkchewation proparly" in your poignant assessment.

I would love to see a report done on crooked hogwan owners and their expoitation of teachers, Korean laws and general dirtiness.

A friend of mine who arrived at a new school in December has been lied to, forced to work on weekends and holidays and denied health care and pension benefits.

Interesting how Koreans love to point the finger towards others but rarely every examine themselves honestly.

I think it'd receive pretty poor ratings. Ooh! The wonjang asked him to stay late for a staff meeting after classes were finished! That girl had to sweep her classroom! That poor guy was forced against his will to decorate a classroom for Halloween AND he had to individually wrap presents for Children's Day!

Look! That unfortunate young grad just set a record for most consecutive ħs received within a 10 minute span!

Oh, the humanity. I think most viewers would say "what's the big friggin' deal?" Most Korean workers would say "I experience sh_t like that every day, stop whining."

Unless your boss is raping you or beating you, you're not going to receive much sympathy.

It also has a well-deserved shoddy reputation in the ESL scene for dishonest school owners. Two sides to every story.

It would never be done, but yeah, if it were then the ratings would be poor.

Sad thing is, IF there were such an "investigative" program on Korean TV about the "evil" school owners, you know this is the type of BS they will highlight. It furthers the proof that all of us are unqualified if we whine and complain about such trivialities.

Such "investigative" programs would gloss over (if they mention it at all, which I doubt) all of the illegalities-- refusing to pay, farming out the teacher illegally, illegal firings, stealing of passports, below standard housing, etc etc.

Why would they do that when all it does is put Korea in a bad light, when it is much easier to choose the most outrageous examples of what we do, make it look like all of us are doing it, and paint us as the foreign feral savages.

There's no upside for them to do such a report on the owners. If you want a report to be done on the owners, it has to be the foreign press that does it, someone with experience with investigative reporting a la 60 Minutes (who, I admit, have their own biases and agendae).

I had specifically asked for the opinions of the Western CHICKS on Dave's, because I wanted to hear the CHICK perspective. Thank you, Crazylemongirl for accommodating my sexist request. Wink
