Ko Samui is fine - if you get out of the tourist/bar districts.

Same goes for Phuket.

Ko Tao - I couldn't stand it. Like being stuck on an indian reserve back in Canada except with a nice little beach. Too crowded and dilapidated. Much too small. 1 day on the island was more than enough (been 3 times though as I was slow to make up my mind - wanted to give the island a few tries before wrote it off).

Ko Pha Ngan is the better island IMO between the two.

I've ridden all over Samui and there are some nice little spots that we found - but you have to leave the tourist/bar districts to find them.

Oh well, tourists are lazy aren't they.

I live on Phuket, but not in the tourist strip of Patong/Kata/Karon. Most anywhere you are - if it is a tourist zone - just head up the road a half hour and you'll be away from it.

My Bangkok apartment (yeah, I live in both places now. My home is on Phuket, but I am working on a contract in BKK) is not in a tourist area - no problems.

Samui is a little too small to get away from it, but Phuket is quite a large island. There are still rural villages and semi-deserted beaches. But most people don't bother to explore.

i guess the main pull for Tao is the reef that is easily accesible around it and the lack of a party scene and rustic nature of the place. if you're looking to party, yeah, samui or koh pha ngan are the places to go. if you're looking to chill and snorkel beautiful reefs, koh tao is the place (or koh phi phi, i've heard.) are there any snorkel/dive possibilities on pha ngan?

Beat that!

Seriously though, preaching on righteousness is never going to be fun especially on such a serious topic as this one.

How easy it is to resent God's gracious forgiveness of others whom we consider to be far worse sinners than ourselves.

But when our self rightouesness gets in the way of rejoicing when others come to God, we are no better than the Pharisees.
