Jinju, how good are your photographs? I mean, they look so different from the instamatic shots I produce, that anything is good comparitively. Is it training / knowledge, equipment, or were you just a born shutterbug? All of the above?

Anyway, your shots portray very interesting perspectives on often mundane physical objects (in Korea). They look fabulous.

Its equipment and pretty much a LOT of practice, as in DAILY photoshoots.

What happened to the photo shoot idea? That's one of the few things a few hours on a bus or train, a bunch of money on tickets/lodging, etc., would be worthwhile for...

I had the 28-135 IS lens, but traded up for the 28-70 2.8L, as I found the former was a bit soft in the corners. It was my first foray into Canon L glass and I haven't looked back. The difference is huge.

Canon has recently introduced the EOS 5D, an advanced ameteur/semi-pro Dig SLR. The advantages: full frame. I've got my eye on it and I'm saving my pennies. I've been reading that the price of the EOS 1Ds has been coming down over the past little while since the intoduction of the 5D, that's the bad boy I'd really like. I think I'm going to Seoul to price some things soon.

The 50 1.4 can be had for relatively cheap, and it's a good lens. Sharp stopped down from 4.0.

How much was the upgrade in price to the 28-70 2.8? Is L glass really worth the price??

I've seen the 5D, looks good, but I'm not that rich.. I think I'd rather go for a cheaper body and some L glass if it's worth it than spend the extra $$ on a full frame sensor body.

Anyhow, the end of Feb should show wether canon releases a 20D replacement, then I'll decide what to do based on the available funds ^_^

Tripod. It'll be worth it. Pin-sharp images. It took me a while to get my mind around the idea, but I don't go anywhere without some kind of tripod anymore. Slik makes a solid, inexspensive mini tripod.

Which Slik model are you talking about in particular?

In a word, yes. Once you see the difference, you'll agree. Some will argue that some Sigma and Tamron lenses, say, are comparable and even superior to the "L" series, but generally speaking L glass is worth every penny.

Having said that, there are some very good non-L lenses that are almost comparable in image quality. The 100mm 2.8 Macro and the 50mm 1.4 (or even the 1.Cool are two that I own that spring to mind.

I'd wholeheartedly agree. At the end of the day your images are only as good as the lenses you're using. I sunk most of my money into L glass first and am now saving and deciding which DSLR body is next on my wish list. Was pricing the 5D today ... 3.2 was the best price I found among half a dozen or so shops. Hmmmm ...

L glass is great. But like anything premium, its highly marked up based on a reputation. A well deserved reputation, but the markup is "generous". Take the f/4 17-40. I have a Tamron f/2.8 17-35. Half the price of the L 17-40. Ive read tests that showed the Tamron to be sharper between f/4 and f/10 PLUS I get to enjoy f/2.8 and f/3.2 and f/3.5. For me, the choice was obvious as the price difference was about 400,000 won.

But do you know what I found? Once I put the 50mm on my camera, I have a very hard time taking it off. and the 50mm cost me 120,000 won. I love the focal length and since I shoot mostly in AV mode I love being able to open up to f/1.8.

I don:t know about camera:s but it theyre anything computer gear, you always go for the second most current version. They come way down in price when the new thing comes out. You dont really get good value trying to keep up with the Jones.

Well, thats true to an extent. But not really. Take the Canon 5D. It will not be coming down in price anytime soon as Canon will not be releasing a full format DSLR positioned between the 20D and the 1D Mark II.

Bumping the thread up...

If anyone has time this week I will most likely be going out on the streets of Seoul to do some photography pretty much every day from Monday to Friday. If you have time between 9 a.m and 5-6 p.m we can meet up.

Another bump to ask a question to those in the know ...

Was in Seoul today to run a few errands, had some time to kill and decided to go looking for the camera shop "district" that I'd thought I'd read about here (other than the other camera shop areas around Namdaemun/Myong Dong or Yongsan Electronics Market). I could have sworn I read someone say something about an area around Chungmuro Station that had a new/used camera shop district, so I went wandering around there. I found loads of graphic design/digital processesing places, but no camera shops.

Can anyone tell me if I imagined this bit of info and whether or not such a "district" exists? Can anyone provide directions? Bueller ...?

Thanks.
