Concur. I've just been listening to some old Kinks, Ray Davies is probably the most underrated songwriter in British pop history.
(A bold statement to be sure, but it sounds much better than 'I really really like his songs')
Maybe it's not 'the most perfect' of his many perfect songs, but the almighty has made it abundantly clear that "Do It Again" is without a doubt the theme song in the soundtrack of my life.

God I love this song
In the mornin you go gunnin'
For the man who stole your water
And you fire till he is done in
But they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin'
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin'
And they put you on the street
CHORUS:
You go back Jack do it again
Wheel turnin' 'round and 'round
You go back Jack do it again
When you know she's no high climber
Then you find your only friend
In a room with your two timer
And you're sure you're near the end
Then you love a little wild one
And she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smilin'
You'll be on your knees tomorrow
CHORUS
Now you swear and kick and beg us
That you're not a gamblin' man
Then you find you're back in Vegas
With a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money
So you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey
You must put them on the table
DO IT AGAIN
Steely Dan
This song was written in 1972, but when I listen to it - there's no 1970's feel to it...sounds like it couldve been written and performed yesterday.
It's timeless. |

This came up on another thread awhile back. I think both Eamo and I would agree with this (though I don't want to speak out of turn for Eamo).
On topic, just listened to The Clash's London Calling last night and it seemed as fresh as ever. A song that doesn't fade. |

I would indeed agree about Ray Davies. Great songwriter.
Don't like The Clash much though. |

Complete Control is their masterpiece anyway.
Best song ever: Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen; or the English Version: That's Entertainment, The Jam
Lower middle class angst and ennui, respectively. What could be better? |

| Back when stereo was kind of new and they were learning how to use it to good effect, Buffy Sainte-Marie did a cover of Cohen's "Magic is Alive" (some title like that). It was a great 'stereo' song. |

This reminds me of something I meant to say. Over half of the music I regularly listen to anymore predates the advent of stereo, and all but a fraction of my film collection is black & white.
Oh, and Ray Davies has been "Britain's Most Underrated Songwriter" for so long that he legally changed his middle name to that in 1967. Ray B.M.U.S. Davies, (recently) CBE. |

The Clash suck donkey balls. Always have... London Calling is one of the most overrated albums of all time.
"EMI"-Sex Pistols
"Heartbeat"-Buddy Holly
"Motorcycle Emptiness"-Manic Street Preachers
"Wild Horses"-Rolling Stones
"When The Sun Hits"-Slowdive
"On The Wall"-The Jesus And Mary Chain
"Back To The Old House" (Peel)-The Smiths
"Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquidalymistic"-Isaac Hayes
"Every Breath You Take"-The Police
There are too many to list. |

Yes, especially given the alternatives he listed.
The Clash suck yet the Sex Pistols and Smiths make the cut?
And Ouzo?
Let's be honest- it's the poorman's Sambucca.
But to each his own. |

This seems to have turned into a 'songs I like' thread so without further ado, at the moment I am particularly enjoying:
Labi Siffre - I got the
Asian Dub Foundation - Flyover
Bloc Party - Like eating glass
The Libertines - What Katy did
The Specials - Pressure drop
Ol Dirty B****rd - The Stomp
Punjabi Hit Squad - Get crunked up
Calibre - Drop it down
Carmen McVeigh - How long has this been going on?
Edit: Forgot to add....
Super Junior - Can't stop thinking about you girl |
