Well, for light, sentimental rock Journey's not bad to hear once in a while:

(I see a lot of great classic stuff on YouTube - I guess I'd better read through this whole dang thread to see what's been selected so far ...)

This is not "great classic stuff." This is gonna hurt you in the next life, rteacher.

It also violates the principle of the thread which is to provide people things they can download. (I know that there are ways to overcome YouTube's blocks, but not with my browser. And why would I want to download this?)

Nobody has posted any blues yet, and that's a real lack. So here's some blues for you all.

First, two songs by Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows, consistently picked as the best bar band in Chicago in my early days there:

300 Pounds of Heavenly Joy

and

Too Much Barbecue

You might guess from this that Big Twist was indeed a big guy.

Willie Dixon was the greatest blues songwriter of the post-war era, but rarely performed his own tunes. Here's one he did do:

29 Ways

Another one from the great New Orleans blues pianist, Professor Longhair:

Mardi Gras in New Orleans

And lest we think the blues was man's work, here's Big Mama Thornton, the woman who did the original version of Hound Dog that Elvis covered. This song involves a different animal:

I Smell a Rat

Two rock and roll tunes to close out my contributions to this thread:

First, because Flotsam once said he'd never heard of Warren Zevon, here's a sample for him of what happens when you turn loose a man who studied with Stravinsky on a funk bass line:

Genius

Last, a very short tune by Sam Phillips:

Compulsive Gambler

I won't put any more up on this thread. I've already done too much damage to gaj's original idea. It would be nice to get feedback - how do people respond to these - positive or negative. Unlike my earlier contributions, these are all in English, if that was holding people back. Enjoy.

I'll post my second contribution.

DJ Krush remixes some of Ronny Jordan's sweetest tunes, picking some of the jazz guitarist's most heavy grooves to subtley reshape into funked up hip hop. A succesful collaboration that's more accessible than you might expect from sonic experimenter Krush.

Artist: Ronny Jordan & DJ Krush
Album: Bad Brothers: Ronny Jordan meets DJ Krush
Song: S**t Goes Down (But I Got Phunked Up Mix)

Totally underrated David Bowie song:

David Bowie: 'Move On': http://fileanchor.com/71979-d

See also: Bowie covers Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd's 'See Emily Play'. I make the latter one of the best covers of all time.

i saw them live when they opened for They Might Be Giants. Very Happy it was awesome. and i think they had just signed their record contract. (but i bought their cute little homemade cd anyway -- i think i like the original versions of some of their songs more than the studio ones, but maybe that's because i heard the originals first.)

Yes, the rules are out the window! Go nuts! Do what you like! Except you still have to be posting songs for download. Imbroglio, ChapChaeJoe, Rteacher and Ody are all on notice for screwing up in this respect.

Sorry for my lack of participation but I've reached my bandwidth limit for the month and have had my internet speed cut to dial-up rates - NZ internet SUXX0RZ. So yeah, downloading and uploading stuff has become a lot less easy for me, especially when quite a few files aren't working for me in iTunes on first download - Woland, this includes your moon music, which I'm still looking forward to hearing.

Then here are two contributions from me. The first is Charlie and his Orchestra, a wartime German swing group that made propaganda songs to use against enemies. Nazi jazz, think about it. This song is a parody of Elmer's Tune.

Here's a Korean song from Rux.

As its Friday, and I have no classes today, here is one more contribution from myself. This is the Punjabi MC's remix of 'Billy Jean'.

As the rules are now out the window...

While I try to find my track in a non-Apple bastard form, here is a somewhat, not so bad surfing video with Windsurfing Nation as the soundtrack. You need to be patient for 1:30.

Windsurfing Nation

Other BSS vids:

FireEyed Boy On Letterman

Almost Crimes

Pitter Patter Goes My Heart

Cause=Time

Shoreline

I'm Still Your Fag

Ahhhh..angsty Canucks with issues and musical talent. Sweet.
