Actually, my sister married his son, Robert Hawking. (Separated now unfortunately ) Steven Hawking had come to the apartment (flat if you are British) for a reception. His assistant carried him up the stairs. Myself and another person carried the wheelchair up the stairs. This was in Glasgow, Scotland.
BTW, my name's not Brian. |

Ah, forgot one. A biggie too. I met the Queen mother in Bermuda.
Early mid 70's. I think I was 8-11 years old. My mother is from Bermuda, and the whole family went down to the airport to see the Queen mothers plane land. Shortly before her plane landed someone came around asking if the kids wanted to meet the her. Sure! So they herded about 40 of us onto the tarmac just outside the doors and behind a rope. We received very brief instructions. If she wants to shake your hand, do so, but let go immediately and do not squeeze. Otherwise do not reach for or touch her. She got off the plane, and actually shook hands with almost 20 of us. Well, I wouldn't call it an actual shake. More like a brief grasp with fingers only. No hand. She did stop and ask a couple of kids their names, and I think she commented on a little girls dress. She only shook my hand said hello to me. Still, I had the honor of being one. She seemed really nice and actually really very happy to meet us.
In thinking about that now, I realize how much our world has changed. I don't know, but I bet that reception was thought up on the spur of the moment. Security? Hah! Could something like that happen now? Doubt it. |
