I recently filled out an application for SMOE, and checked that I've been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, which I take medication for. Given the stigma Koreans have about mental illness, should I not have mentioned it? Could this keep me from getting hired? |

I wouldn't mention it. It's not anything they can physically "test" so there is no way they could find out. It's really none of their business.. Also, the standards of mental illness diagnosis are different here in Korea. They do not use the DSM diagnostic criteria and therefore you might be admitting to a disorder that isn't actually what the Korean view of that disorder is. |

My concern is that I already mentioned it on the application...and it's not anything that keeps me from working-I've been a teacher in the US for 4 years. I just hope they don't see that and automatically throw my application out. |

Knowing the way things go in korea you should have posted that question before you sent the application and I (and alot of others) would have said not to say anything if you can at all get away with it.
You never know what kind of fickle decisions can get made in the ROK. |

Hopefully you ordered 4 or 6 certified copies of your degree and sent one of those to SMOE. Now you can send the other copies to other recruiters.
If you for some reason sent your original degree you can try to get it
back if they refuse you or you can check into getting a replacement.
The point is there are tons of jobs. If you don't get this one it's no big
deal. |

I haven't sent them anything yet, thankfully. I just filled out the application and sent it to the Footprints recruiter. I just hate that I might have ruined my chances with one of the best places to work in Seoul |

Just be careful that you don't apply twice for the public school jobs because they have announced that they will $hitcan any application that is received more than once through multiple channels. |

Self Medical Check form.
Do you have any health problems?
I think, "poly cystic ovarian syndrome, cold induced urticaria, Raynaud's disease."
I write, "None known."
Doctor appointment in Korea.
Doctor asks, "So, how is your health?"
I say, "I feel good. I exercise 5 days a week, taekwondo, soccer, don't smoke."
"Any mental problems?"
Visions of wanting to rip people's legs off to beat them with it a la OLD MISS DIARY style dance in my head.
I say, "Nope. I'm happy in Korea."
That's how you do medical things in Korea. |

I also take a daily pill for anxiety and I've had no problems. My Korean doctor filled out my health form and said that with the pill I was fine. No problem. |

Link or proof of this? I don't think this is true and I'm pretty sure that it never has been true. Sorry, not trying to jack this thread but I wanted to emphasize two views on this. I'm of the opinion that many stupid recruiters will lie and say this. I think it would be so incredibly stupid of the Korean ESL industry to do this as it makes it very hard to hire new teachers if they did. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this was true I guess.

Just hope your anxiety is well under control if you're gong to be teaching Korean kids. |

I dunno. If you REALLY REALLY do your homework, the best 5-10% of Hagwons pay 30% more and are far better learning environments than even Public Schools. And if you had your heart set on PubSchool, they are mostly all the same... |

You've obviously never taught in Washington DC. I'm pretty sure I can handle Korean kids. |

Still, it depends where you're working and under what conditions you're working in. Korean kids and the Korean education system is nothing at all like I expected it to be. |
