hola...in the market for a guitar...just wondering--what are the best brands available here in korea? good, but affordable...like, say, a korean version of epiphone...probably going to get an acoustic for now, and i'm hoping to spend around 300 max, but will push it up to 500 for the right guitar.
oh, and if anyone knows of a particular shop that has more than like, one left-handed guitar available, that would be fantastic.
thanks in advance. |

I'm sorry to rain on your parade, but today most Epiphones are being made in Korea.
Lefties are difficult to find. In Korea, Cort and Crafter are two of the major makes. There are others as well and they include: Bug's Gear, Gretches; Washburn, etc. Best of luck to you. |

if you're referring to the samick factory, that closed down years ago. they hadn't made any significant number of epiphones for like 15 years anyway. epiphones are made mostly in china, with a few series in nashville and japan. made-in-korea knockoffs are floating around nakwon...last i knew, epiphone didn't even have a korean distributor because of that problem.
thanks for your other advice, though. |

Ah, if only you could hold off for a couple months. I'm outta here in December and I'll be looking for someone to sell my lefty acoustic and bass to. Lefties are impossible to find unless you start looking into the million Won range. |

Hey,
I have a Cort, model CJ 10 X, which I bought new for W570,000 about 5 years back. No regrets, except maybe that it's such a nice guitar I can't take it to the beach, camping, etc. Beautiful instrument that sounds better every year. |

Whether the knock-offs are made here or China is anyone's guess. I believe they are still being made here and that some of the Factory seconds and others that "fall of the truck" are sold here. But many others are exported.
I found a whole bunch of them for sale last year. They sounded quite nice.
FWIW, Samick Korea haven't made acoustics in their Incheon/Bupyeon Factories for a few years. They are now being made in China and Indonesia.

I've got an SJ-10x back home that I picked up here some years ago - great guitar, and a sweet deal. Just picked up another Cort, the MR-710 for under 200K. Again, an amazing deal, and it sounds fantastic.
OP - do a search for "nagwon and sanga". |

I did a search for Nakwon. Even searched the place myself.
Believe me, 95% of the guitars there are FAKE. They price their Gibsons high to make it seem real but it's all fake. I even got confirmation from the places I was shopping at, which was strange...one guy had a Zakk Wylde Custom (camo) with EMGs but he told me that the headstock, made in USA print, etc...were all fake. Even the EMGs were fake (that part killed me the most)
They weren't trying very hard to mask the fact that they sold fakes, either. Weird...
I was really looking forward to buying an Epiphone here (since they make them here and also in China) but even the budget line's brand name is unreliable. They even have a note about Nakwon on their website in the form of a letter from 2005. Sorry, I don't have the link...
...however, I still want to buy an electric with a 24.75 neck length. I think maybe I'll just settle for a well-made fake. Any advice on going about this?
How do I know if the wood is good? (some use particle boards for the body...amazing...maybe even cardboard heh) Is there some sort of test I could do?
There was an Epiphone LP custom that looked good on the outside and sounded like what I wanted, but I have no idea what the wood is made out of and the serial number is easily bogus (only 6 numbers). He was asking 350, including setup and hard case. Realistically, how much would I be able to bargain this down to? I know there are lots of questions in this post but I would be very thankful for any insights. |

Mr. Potato in Songtan is open again--he makes all of his guitars himself, from quality wood--great tone and very reasonable. Worth a look. |

OP: If you're really worried about quality, I have two suggestions:
1- Go to a luthier and get a custom job.
2- Contact Harpeau and ask him what he has. He tends to price by quality, but even his cheap ones are in good shape. |
