There's another thread in the general discussion forum about getting trashed but I wonder what you are doing with your students.

I'm planning on doing some games of musical statues, pass the parcel, eating M and Ms with chopsticks plus some craft activities like making crowns wands.

Anyone got any brilliant ideas for what to do with the kids next week?

I was very excited, as I was just at Wal-Mart, and they were selling witches hats. So, I'm going to dress up as a witch, and I thought bobbing for apples might be sufficiently messy to interest them. I'd try carving pumpkins if I trusted them with knives, but I don't. Other than that, yeah make masks, give out candy....I like your idea for M&Ms with chopsticks. I might try that, as well.

If you can work with your director, see if you can have some of your classes "trick or treat" at some of the student's houses. You can make masks (paper or styrofoam plates, or paper) and have each kid decorate the masks and their bags (handled, paper shopping bags). It's kind of fun to parade down the street, then saying "trick or treat" when they ring the bell of the apartment!

Search the web for some Halloween songs. I know there aren't many, but I remembered a song called "Old Mrs. Witch" that I taught my kids...and added hand gestures so that they kind of understood what they were singing about!

You could also try to find the biggest pumpkin that you can and carve it for a jack o'lantern.

Have fun!

Time to dig out my ski goggles and be jollaman. My kids idolize the lovable stick figure for some reason (great for teaching verbs, just draw a stick man with a visor over his eyes doing whatever and you kids eyes will go all wide and they'll actually pay attention).

I have a big hagwan, so were going to trick-or-treat in school! I was going to try to get them to dress up, but my experience with other western holidays in korea tells me that that wouldn't work.

i spent the past two halloweens in korea. each time, i carved a pumpkin for each of my classes. i had them each draw a design for it on a sheet of paper, and then we had a class vote on which design they liked best. i drew that design on the pumpkin, and carved it myself. i let them (the ones who were up for the task) scoop out the guts of the pumpkin, cause that's half the fun, and didn't involve knives. the best part for me was that at the end of the day, i had six jack o' lanterns that i could put candles in and put on my roof for the next week or so.

also, it's fun to turn out all the lights (if you have a room with no windows), open your eyes really wide, and shine a flashlight on your face from below. makes for a pretty scary effect, particularly with the little ones.

last, but certainly not least, it's a blast to get one of those horribly scary rubber masks, and sneak up to another classroom, and scare the hell out of an unsuspecting korean teacher, and her (up til that point) well behaved class.

i love halloween so much. i'm really bummed that i'm probably going to miss out on it in korea this year, particularly because it coincides with hongdae's club night. i've got a kickin' pirate costume. i guess spending halloween in new orleans is an okay consolation prize.

We're having a Halloween party at my hagwon.

The kids are inviting friends, 1-3 each. We'll have the classrooms decorated. Children will be encouraged to dress up and will be given prizes for best costume.

One classroom will be a haunted house. Then their will be a game room and something else. Someone will be face-painting.

At the end, won-jon-im will pass out candies to all the students and each Trick or Treat bag will have a brochure inside for the new kids who come to give to their parents.

Very easy and inexpensive fun! The only nightmare will be the picking up and dropping off of the students.

Okay, it's almost Chusok, and after I planned for Halloween too late to do much last year I swore I'd prepare better for this year. Time to start.

Costumes.

For students, have you ever had success asking them to dress up?

For me, What do you suggest for a tall big guy? Are there costume shops.

I destroyed some clothes and found an eye patch and sword to make a pirate costume last year, but that's gone now and my students weren't quite sure what I was trying to be. Rolling Eyes

Games and other stuff

What games do you suggest? What activities? I'm thinking of the gross stick-your-hand-in-a-dark-place sort of thing. And?

What films or soundtracks are perfect for backgound noise?

What songs do Korean kids sing easily and happily?

Last year all I did was dress-up myself, have a Halloween puzzle and gave away a ton of candy.

Speaking of candy, where in Korea could I get some cool scary candy?

I teach some Jehovah's Witnesses, so it has to be toned down. I'll do some subtle things like reading stories about pumpkins and harvest that don't mention the "H" word.

wow! this is an old thread. There's a good supply shop near ewha womens university that has lots of cool stuff for cheap. I picked up a bag of dracula teeth for 3000k!

This year will be a lot different as I have a 1000 students now!

I don't know... maybe it was just the subconscious word-association thing, but Jehovah's Witnesses (coming to the door) and "Trick or Treat!"... kinda got me all nervous here....

Oh no! Did I just hear the footsteps of two well-dressed, middle-aged Korean ladies??!! Shocked ... Quick! Draw the curtains and pretend we're not home!
