Hi all,
I live in Jecheon, a small city with a small number of foreigners. I am not into drinking every weekend and need to find a group to join where I can meet people, but as I live outside the bigger cities I am finding it difficult finding out about these groups. I can only get to the larger cities in the weekend.
something like a book group? wine appreciation group? study group?
anything where I can meet people.
Ideas anyone please.

Here's a link to a hiking club someone posted in another topic.

Adventurekorea.com has regular trips around the country. I've met some cool people on those trips.

I like the idea of having foreigner trips, but the only departure point is in Seoul which makes it a long trip in itself for small town based teachers to get to.

I have been thinking along the same lines OP, but the fact is, there is little to be found here, except wandering and exploring around on your own. I haven't found any special specific interest groups in Changwon, except informal socializing at the 2 foreigner bars; that's it. I only know of those sorts of things being in Seoul only. I was hoping to find others who like fishing horseback riding, hiking, etc. outside of Seoul, but you're on your own outside of work and going to foreigner bars. Fact is, a city of 500,000 is a small town that offers very little when in Korea while this town in a western country would be a big city that offers more than enough of everything to do; including plenty of people to meet, activities, organizations, and places to go. This was my mistake in picking a place to live here. Go to Seoul if coming to Korea or coming back as to have access to people, places, and all things you might like to have and do. It really is tough to live a well rounded lifestyle with severely limited options I must say. To put it into analogy, I felt like I was going back to prison (never did time in a real prison!) on my return to Korea from family emergency leave! Korea is not a bad country, it's just for the Koreans only, except Seoul does have pieces of the outside world embedded such as foreigner special interest clubs and places to go, things to do, and people to meet.

And I don't want to move to Seoul. thing is in the UK when I lived there, when I go tlonely I went and joined the kayaking and the drama group....here there is probably plenty but I dont' have much Korean so its hard to join in. I really do want to meet more westerners.

The first year was an adventure..the second is the hard one I think

If you join facebook or check meetup.com for groups in Korea, you may find something you like. I'm a member of KOTESOL and I started the Seoul Stand-Up Comedy Meetup Group. But with facebook and meetup, you're able to find out a MUCH greater range than just asking us folks (teachers and pseudo-teachers alike) about available groups.

Try the Hash House Harriers ( http://www.gthhh.com or http://www.half-mind.com ); they have chapters in nearly every part of Korea and are fun for informal exploring. They usually do a fair amount of drinking afterwards, but you are not required to join in. Some people leave after the jog/hike, others stick around and have soda or water.

I second the facebook and meetup.com ideas. It is starting to take off amongst the expat community here and provides the kind of info that you would previously have discovered too late or third-hand.
