Hey guys
If one's visa is in the process of being made
and one has no bank account yet because one has no official visa or korean identification papers..
how can you get paid from a hakwon if the pay day is sometime this week, and lets say the visa pick-up day is next week?
or..
is it possible to make a simple bank account with a US passport alone?
thanks guys |

I am fairly sure that you can open a bank account with just your passport. ie without your ARC. I didn't end up doing it ... but I can remember reading after the event that you didn't need to have the ARC to open an account. Definitely worth talking to the bank ...

You can open a bank account with a passport, mainly beciase bank staff do not know that foreigners have ARCs. Banks ask for your passport anyway because it contains your signature. |

Just to let you know IBK usually is a good bank to go to if you don't have an ARC. The one in Itaewon and Dongdaemun I know work or have worked in the past month or so. |

In the old days, everyone used to get paid in cash. How about asking for cash?
I remember once having like 6-7mil in cash from my severances, last pays, deposits, etc. ALL IN CASH. Yup the good old days. |

I opened my first bank account in Korea two years ago with only a passport.
They could also pay you in cash. |

The hogwan CAN pay you in cash. If they refuse, and INSIST on paying you by direct deposit ONLY, then you're dealing with a hagwon that has cheated teachers somwehere else.
Why are you teaching WITHOUT a Visa? |

Yep. The OP is being paid this week, and that implies a month has gone by and they have no visa.
Better off stuffing your cash under the mattress until you get a visa. No paper trails for illegal work is best. |

If you're paid in cash, better to get all W10,000 bills and no checks. Places usually ask for your ARC to cash them! Just so you don't feel discriminated against, they also ask Koreans for their ID number. |
