|
|
Basically, I would like to know if we got ripped off, and whether we need to register our bikes.
We bought 2: one for me, one for husband. They are nothing special...no gears even. I paid 80,000 he paid 100,000. Got bike locks thrown in.
Now that we have them, do we need to register them at a police station?
Thanks to anyone who has answers.

Price is probably okay.
If at all possible, don't keep them outside. If you must, make them look as old and crappy as possible. Maybe take the seat and front wheel with you. |

yeah...had the unfortunate experience of having a bike nabbed in China. So we've taken to lugging our bikes up to our apartment (well, lugging as in via elevator ) and storing them in the extra room. |

I would for sure take them down to the police station. They have an expert who can tag and serial number your bike. That way he can use the national data bank to track when it is stolen. The police take it very serious when your bike is stolen so you need to be sure to keep a very accurate record of everything. If they fail to find your bike in Korea then they will use interpol to track down the bike thief.
---Just Joking. The police can't find their own butts with their hands...they care nothing for your bikes. If they are stolen then just buy new ones. When was the last time you bought a bike...1950? (80,000 or 100,000 is cheap) |

oh my
well, we were told by a korean teacher at school that bikes could be found for between 50,000 and 80,000.
and 1950? My mother wasn't even born yet, and I highly doubt that bikes cost $80-100 back then.
So, I gather from your post that we should just hope they don't get stolen, and we aren't supposed to get them registered, as you do in some places. |

Well, honestly, even back home the cops wouldn't care too much about your stolen bike, so you can be damn sure the Korean cops won't care either. Definitely a better idea to just keep them in the apartment. |

Sorry about being rude. I had a bike stolen and so did many Koreans I know. We just buy new bikes...that's why when people buy very expensive bikes they never leave them unattended. You have to expect someone to steal it.
Anyone can afford 80,000~100,000 for a bike. Just use the bike lock and nver leave it outside overnight. |

It's all good...annoying newbie asking dumb questions.
I'm gonna buy another bike lock, so I'll have 2, and then lock it to secured railings and the like. I would just hate to have something else stolen...
had my wallet stolen the day I arrived, in a nice big Homever, right outta my bag.
Never had anything stolen before, not in China, the Philippinees, or other Asian countries.
Crap luck...but, Koreans have told me that now I should only have good luck. |

You didn't mention the type of bikes that you bought. A cheapo, full suspension mountain bike should be around that price if you bought it from your local bike shop. It's probably slightly cheaper off the Internet. |

Geonics Classica and Bitec Ladies...
Nothing special about the bikes at all, very basic and plain. Mine has a funny little ajuma basket (which I secretly like ).
I have a feeling we could have bought them for maybe 20-30,000 cheaper, but since our mastery of the Korean language is still fairly primitive, I couldn't be bothered to bargain. Also, it was on Chuseuk, and I was surprised he was opened at all, as everything else in town was closed.
If they get stolen, definately gonna bargain for the next bikes though. |

| A bike sat on the street outside my apartment for 5 months. When it fell over, someone would prop it up again. This spring a vine grew through the spokes; someone carefully removed the vine, and then trimmed the vine back so it wouldn't happen again. The bike slowly rusted...it was a shame as it was a nice nearly new bike with plenty of gears. I've no idea who left it here or why, but it finally disappeared last week. |
