OK,
I think everyone knows that there is racism towards foreigners in Korea. Koreans have very little contact with foreigners and have a lot of misconceptions. (I heard that STD's come from foreigners. Thanks for the heads up Korea!) We are all in a way like Jackie Robinson and must prove ourselves everyday. Unfortunately, not everyone is given the opportunity. How many of us have non-white co-workers who are not Korean. Canadians/Americans/Brits/Aussies/Kiwi's of Chinese, East Indian, Black, Philipino descent do not get a fair shake in the job market. Apparently Korea didn't get the memo on affirmative action. I can't blame Korea because our countries were once havens for this kind of prejudice but through contact and understanding we were able to vanquish our misconceptions. OK now that you've read my endless babble here is my question. How many of you have non white co-workers? Please let me know. I will be honest and tell you that I am a recruiter and I stand to profit from the information. If that causes you to not respond then that is your perrogative. I am trying to help people get jobs in Korea and I hate telling non-white applicants the Korea has a racist hiring policy. The more foreigners that come the sooner Koreans can learn to understand us. (That includes our non white compatriots) Please let me know if you work at an equal opportunity employer. Thanks

I've met several teachers working at hogwons that are of East-Indian descent and they've reported no problems, one guy even has a really cush position.
Can't say I've ever met a black or non-Korean asian hogwon teacher though. |

Hi! Thanks for your effort.
I have worked with all nationalities, including Dominican Republic and Chinese.
I cannot with good conscience recommend any of the institutions, however. Let's leave it at that. Most of them are black or gray listed chains, so you'll know that much.
And the opportunities are better out in the countryside since they have trouble getting Joe Bloggs to venture outside of Seoul. |

I am a mixed raced Canadian of west indian descent. I have a pretty cool job as far as hagwons go.
Actually, today for the first time one of my kids(new) asked if I was from Africa, it was innocent and polite. I haven't really had a problem except for being mistaken for American and chased down a street.
Aside from that, work wise no problems. As a recruiter I hope you try to get some people of colour to Korea cause they (Koreans) could really use the exposure. |

I'm white, but my wife is Filipino (Canadian born and raised) and we just accepted jobs at Ulsan with a school that sounds good. |

I am ethnically Korean (born and raised in Canada). I and another gyopo, American raised, work at a hagwon. Not just gyopos work for the chain either. I met non-Korean Asians and one black teacher as well. |

i work with a Philipino who was raised in canada. he is pretty cool and he seems to have less problems thean me, he has had zero problems at the hagwon. Because he looks a little Korean nobody gives him the stares. the only problem is when we catch a taxi or get something to eat together, the waitress or driver always asks him. i speak Ok Korean and he speaks none, so I think he finds it a hassle, a little bit that he is an assumed korean. |

Hi,
I appreciate the replies so far. Apparently it isn't hopeless. Could anyone working at an elightened hagwon please let me know if they need a teacher. I know a guy of East Indian descent who is looking and I'm having a hard time. Thanks for your help.
