I'm sure you have your fair share of gobbledegook coming out of your students electronic dictionaries so I thought you might appreciate this site!

Aigu! I typed "Mary had a little lamb who's fleece was white as snow"

It got translated back from Korean as:

"The woolen fabric eye is small and because from that place of both
conveniences which are young the maul li it is a white inside"

"that place of both conveniences"????

Ok...was in my class this week and looked up "goo-doo-swe" (sorry, on an English comp...) and broke out in a cackle with the first definition!

#4 penny pincher
#3 tightfisted
#2 niggardly
#1 a Jew

Dude, WTF?!?!!?!?!?!

The Japanese girls were saying "Jew! Jew! Jew!"...and while I was crying in laughter, and choking on words like "no, don't say that" I think I pissed myself!

Ohhh, the humanity.

Shoosh,

From "Animals are my friends and I don't eat my friends" comes

"The animals are not my friends and they do not eat my friends"

Some computers are so stubborn.

How about this one:

"Leslie stroked her bronze, pert breasts, plucking her fingers over her perky nipples, as she fantasized about her lover's hard, powerful organ."

"How much in such a way that relative Fantasized lasts delays the agency, that one is efficient, more ahead than the triumphant nature he was Leslie, that they more ahead in triumphant natures, of that demands it? That barretta relative is the technician of center of entrerrosca perky of the valuation of the program to the interior of the relative thing."

To be is to do. [Aristotle] To do is to be. [Descartes] Do be do be do. [Sinatra]

Korean: The what kind of situation must do. What is it is a what kind of
situation. It decides it, it is.

[Cool, sounds very Taoist]

Yoda: Do, or not. There is no try.

Korean: Or it is not intelligence. Reading without.

Those little cheapie dictionaries can get you into trouble.

A friend in Mexico asked me, "how much do you win at work?" I thought.. win? What could I win, another job?.. As it turned out, Spanish ganar means both win and earn in English.

Sometimes the ridiculous translations those machines produce can give you teaching ideas in class. When a student produces a really dated or obscure word on his calculator, I can talk for a while about that. Many students don't understand the idea that words come and go in English over the centuries.
