This is in today's on line Jooang Ilbo

All the time lots of horrible crimes are commited by Koreans. Do we see the headline, "Korean Rapist", "Korean Murderer", I don't think so.
Here we have a case of forgery and fraud. The reporter, a certain Min Dong-ki (Min Donkey!) Places the race card with the big heading "Multi Ethnic Group", this being the most important aspect of the story.
Donkey Min seems to lack journalistic integrity. If you find this offensive as I do, then it may be a good odea to write to the International Herald Tribune, as I'm sure they don't want their name sullied by such gutter journalism.
Multiethnic group accused of forgery of tollgate cards
October 08, 2007
A Japanese gang member colluded with Chinese and South Koreans to forge transportation cards used to pay tollgate fees, Seocho Police in Seoul said yesterday.
A 65-year-old Japanese man and a 42-year-old South Korean man were arrested on charges of forging 35,000 of the cards and selling 3,500 of them, police said. Police did not disclose the suspects names.
Seven South Korean suspects and a 42-year-old second-ranking member of a Japanese crime gang, Inakawa, were also booked on the charge, police said. The crime gang is one of Japans top three crime gangs, or Yakuza, according to police.
Police also plan to ask assistance from Interpol, the international police agency, in arresting two ethnic Koreans living in China who allegedly provided empty plastic cards for the forgeries.
According to police, the group acquired more than 3 million plastic cards from China through the ethnic Koreans, who are Chinese citizens, in late July.
In early August, the arrested Japanese suspect came here with a machine to turn the cards into the transportation cards.
By late last month, the group had sold the cards through Korean brokers to stores in Seoul and Daegu selling gift cards, making a profit of 175 million won, according to police.
The cards, which have a market price of 100,000 won per card, were sold to stores for 50,000 won each.
Because the Korean suspects fear retaliation and are refusing to talk about the Japanese crime gang member, we are looking for more evidence. He [the gang member] is booked without detention and banned from leaving the country, said a police official who refused to be named.

This being Korea, wouldn't the average reader assume that Mr.Kim The Rapist was Korean, and thus they wouldn't need to make a note of it? |

Goldmember,
From what you wrote and from what he wrote I got the distinct mental image of an overly sensitive foreigner grasping at something... might've been straws...
And yeah, KOREAN rapist isn't going to appear in the newspaper but RAPIST will so we all know it was a Korean especially if we live in Korea.
By the by, the only big error I could see was that maybe he should have put multinational instead of multiethnic. Oh well, tomato tomahto... |

I wonder how many newspapers in the US report "American arrested for murdering wife," "Group of Americans foiled in bank robbery" and "American suspect nabbed for serial pedophile rape murders." |

If you find that offensive, perhaps it would be a good "odea" for you to get some sort of professional counseling. |

Doesn't "multi-ethnic" just mean more than one ethic group?
So what's the big deal? There were Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, and probably others. That's multi-ethnic!
Grow up or grow some thicker skin, you'll need it here.

Not to mention, technically speaking it WAS a multi-ethnic group. So, what's the big deal? |

I think the fact that one of the culprits is Japanese might be significant if the crimes are linked to the Yakuza. The article does focus on the foreigners, i.e.,, how they got into the country, but I'm hoping that's because there wasn't much of interest to say about the South Korean participants.
The author does try to be fair, it seems, by pointing out that some Chinese citizens involved are in fact ethnicly Korean. |

Agreed. It's a much better example of the yellow journalism that some Western hacks posting on Dave's are capable of. |

What an idiotic post. In the cases you mention, which are usually domestic crimes committed by Koreans on other Koreans, the ethnicity of the suspects is obvious, and irrelevant.
In a story about an international crime ring, the nationalities of those involved are relevant and the journalist correctly describes it as a 'multi-ethnic' gang, also mentioning the Koreans involved. I don't really see what the problem is, and have seen countless such articles in Western media. |
