Monument to Japan-S Korea ties to lose 'East Sea' reference

Thursday, September 13, 2007 at 13:18 EDT

TOTTORI - A monument commemorating Japan-South Korea ties in Kotoura, Tottori Prefecture, is to be given a new inscription that no longer contains a reference to the "East Sea," as South Korea refers to the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, replacing the original inscription that referred both to the "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan," Kotoura officials said Thursday.

The wording of the inscription has triggered controversy in the town, which faces the Sea of Japan, after the town scratched out a reference to "East Sea" from the existing inscription in March, drawing criticism from the pro-Seoul Korean Residents Union in Japan, or Mindan. An official of Mindan's Tottori Prefecture Headquarter said, "It's the same as saying 'let's stop international exchanges,"' while a former mayor of the town of Akasaki, now part of Kotoura, who was involved in building the monument, urged that the original wording be restored. "east sea"...if Koreans chose ANYTHING ELSE but "east sea", they might have a remote chance at a name change.

This is like the Germans scratching out all references to the Nazis and the holocaust out of their history books. But, unlike the Japanese, the Germans have honor and know what honesty means.

Your comparison is totally inaccurate. This has nothing to do with Japan denying war crimes and crimes against humanity that Japan did in the past. Rather, it has everything to do with being tolerate.

I support Japan on this one. And here's why: Where in Korea do we ever see a monument or Koren-made map that provides both names -- "Sea of Japan" and the "East Sea?" Nowhere!

Japan was respectful toward Korea by providing the name "East Sea." However, Korea has not shown the same respect toward Japan. Korea not only just provides the name "East Sea," but Korea is also intolerant to the idea of the name of "Sea of Japan."

According to Korea, the name "Sea of Japan" is "wrong" and "incorrect," where as the "East Sea" is "right" and "correct." Korea does not end there. Korea than goes further and demands that the entire world only recognize the name "East Sea" and completely stop using and recognizing the name "Sea of Japan," even though every single country in the world, except for the two Koreas, uses and recognizes the name "Sea of Japan." After all, that name makes the most logic. Geographically, the only people that see that body of water as "east" are the two Koreas.

Could you imagine if the United States referred to the Atlantic Ocean as the "East Ocean" and the Pacific Ocean as the "West Ocean," and than demanded that everyone else use only those names for those two respective bodies of water? The Atlantic Ocean is not "east" for the peoples residing in Europe, the Middle East or Africa. And nor is the Pacific Ocean "west" for the peoples residing in Asia, Oceania or Australia.

Korea has failed to provide both names -- Sea of Japan and East Sea. So why should Japan? If Korea won't play fair, why should Japan continue to do so? Given Korea's track record on the naming issue, Japan has every right to take away references to the East Sea in the new monument. It's all about showing respect and being tolerate. If Korea won't do those things for Japan, why should Japan continue to do so for Korea?

"A Sea By Any Other Name"
"Sea of Disputed Nomenclature"
"Russian Sea"
"Hi-Sea"
"Sea No Evil, Hear No Evil"
"The Inter-Korpanese Sea"
"the Sea of Ridiculous-ness"
"The Dokdo Sea"
"The Liancourts Rocks Sea"<--if Dokdo is too controversial
"The Sea Whose Very Name Is a Superficial Obstacle to Harmonious Coexistence, Yet is Also a Useful Tool for Nationalism"

I'm particularly fond of the last one.

"Sea of Two Countries" (or 3 or 4 or what ever really fits)

"Sea of Everlasting Strife"

"The Dragon Sea"

"Sea of Dragons"

"The Blue Sea"

"The Orange Sea"

"The Sea of Legends"

"The Legendary Sea"

"The Animus Sea"

Geckoman, are you joining the ranks of Ilsanman and Guri Guy as an apologist and a denier of Japan's shameful past?
