Just curious about what percentage of people have quit or run on their contracts, and their level of experience in Korea.

I sort of quit one, but that's only cause I was evicted, homeless, and unpaid for more than a month and she refused to fire me. I never even technically quit. Just quit showing up, got another job, then went to Japan.

Was also fired from one contract. But I was trying really hard to get fired. I don't think I've ever worked so hard to not keep a job in my life and my boss was a *beep* who was afraid to fire me.

Never quit a contract, left one early because the owner got fined by immi and had to get rid of two teachers, we only had a month to go, so we resigned to make things easy for our boss. He couldn't replace us for six months. Smile

youre gonna find the results of this poll to be seriously un-representative of the population of ESL teachers in Korea simply because most people on Dave's have been in Korea many times longer than average.

This is what I was going to say. Also, there are many teachers who don't use Daves or simply don't use the internet outside of job searching. This is the big impossible to accurately answer question I have tossed around in my head every since I considered ESL teaching 2 years ago.

I would guess that about 55% complete a whole 1 year contract and get all their money they deserve, but it's impossible to get factual numbers. Only immigration would have any statistics data and then immigration may not know everything that is fact. Not because 45% of schools are bad places to work, but because teachers too can have issues such as a lack of responsibility, extreme newbie culture shock causing a run, or find they hate it here due to severely lacking lifestyle options causing an early flee or simply a communication breakdown between the teacher and director causing the teacher to give it up and leave. To be honest, I have felt so confined as if in some sort of prison being here, not because Korea is a bad place, but because it is not an appropriate fit for me. I had thoughts many times of running due to such generally unpleasant living environment, but stayed the course due to strong work ethic, financial reasons, and responsibility of finishing what I voluntarily committed myself to as long as the employer is willing to stay on course.

I quit my first job after six months and am now into my third contract at my present school.

In my school district, I would say that about 10-20% of public school teachers have quit contracts before finishing and about 50% of English 'camp' teachers have.

It won't be generalizable to the population of ESL teachers in Korea, but it may be generalizable to the population of Dave's ESL Cafe users.

At any rate, I just want to know what people's experiences are.

quit my third job (in the middle of the second contract) with help and good will from my employer - they were happy for me as I was moving from a hagwon to a university.

quit my 5 job (also in the middle of my second contract) and had a big hassle, but pulled the F2-1 visa card and just walked away.

I've read some of your posts. Just curious if job 5 would have included the letter "S."

No. - that was my fourth position and I stayed there 3 years. All good except for the last year and even that was only slightly bad.

I left one job. I still don't think the owner understood the difference between an F and E visa. He said I couldn't leave, he owned me, blah blah.

Finally got some of my pay and quit right there and then friday evening. It was great.

Yeah so... even if you hate Korea, you should at least stick around long enough to finish your current contract.
