Ricotta cheese
Liquid Vanilla
Light and Dark Corn Syrup
White, Cider, and White Wine Vinegar
Apple Cider
Apple Sauce
Fresh herbs (rosemary, chives, thyme, oregano) not the dried stuff
Turkey breast
Self Rising flour
Lasagna noodles
Rolled Oats/Oatmeal

I don't do a lot of shopping in the black markets/foreigner markets and would prefer not to if I can. I don't mind going to Seoul for Costco or the fancy grocery store at Coex etc. I have a crock pot now and have found some very tasty resipes but they call for ingredients that I'm not quite sure where to find them. If anyone knows I'd be grateful. Also if these are available here, does anyone know what some of it is called in Korean so if I have to go searching on my own I can at least have the proper term for the items?

Not sure about the rest, but you can make applesauce at home, easy as pie.
Peel and chop a couple of apples into small pieces. Put them in a pot with a little water, 1/4 cup or so. Cook on medium-low heat for about 20 minutes, and stir it once in a while. Add cinnamon if you like.

I was thinking of making a cobbler in the crock pot so I'm trying to go as easy as possible, dump the stuff in turn on and forget about it. I'll look for a recipe for homemade applesauce. I'm not one of those people who can just experiment with ingrediants and make an edible dish. I have to have a recipe to do things or at least a general ide of quantities etc.

Thanks for reminding me to make it on my own. I forgot that I could make up the sauce one day and then the cobbler later. Could probably make the sauce in the crockpot shove it in the fridge and the next day make the cobbler up.

I think you would find a lot of that stuff at the foreign mart in Itaewon, near the What The Book, or Hannam Supermarket (will be pricey there though).

You might want to check out this website:-

http://homecooking.about.com/library/weekly/aa072798.htm

it is about ingredient substitutions - they suggest that for every tablespoon of fresh herbs you can substitutie one teaspoon of dry

Ricotta cheese-- I haven't seen any. You can make it, but it's a chore.

Liquid Vanilla--I haven't seen any. They do have dry stuff, that is crap.

Light and Dark Corn Syrup--Light corn syrup is available at all grocery stores, even smaller ones. Haven't seen dark.

White, Cider, and White Wine Vinegar--Cider vinegar is available at all grocery stores. Look in the foreign sections for wine vinegar. There are quite a few Korean vinegars that are tasty.

Apple Cider-never seen it.

Apple Sauce-make your own.

Fresh herbs (rosemary, chives, thyme, oregano) not the dried stuff --you can buy rosemary plants at flower shops. In the spring, they also sell mint.

Turkey breast--I've never seen it. But frozen turkeys are available around Thanksgiving.

Self Rising flour
Lasagna noodles--Many of the larger stores have lasagna noodles

Rolled Oats/Oatmeal--this is also available at some of the larger stores, especially Costco and the Foreign Food Mart.

I have purchased liquid vanilla from the foreign food mart in Itaewon, but it's not cheap. A 29ml bottle was about 7000 or 8000 won I believe. I had to buy it though... my baking required it.

Yes.. vanilla essence is (or was when I bought it) available at Hannam Supermarket.

Light Corn Syrup, cider vinegar can be had from your local emart.

White vinegar - costco has it.

If you ever find self-raising flour, let me know.

otherwise, to make it yourself, add 1tsp baking power and 1/2 tsp of salt to 4oz of flour.

Lasagna - try Homever and Homeplus.

Oatmeal - Hannam or Costco.

Ricotta cheese- Never seen it
Liquid Vanilla- I have some. I've never used it (one of those impulse buys at home). Let me know if you are interested and I can mail it to you.
Light and Dark Corn Syrup- No idea
White, Cider, and White Wine Vinegar- Definitly white vinegar is available. I've seen red wine vinegar, so maybe White wine is available too.
Apple Cider- on occasion. Check your local homever/homeplus/megamart.
Apple Sauce- make it
Fresh herbs (rosemary, chives, thyme, oregano) not the dried stuff- rosemary can be bought at most corner florists. Sometimes Thyme. The others you might have to grow.
Turkey breast- crazy expensive at Hannam market. sometimes costco
Self Rising flour- never seen it
Lasagna noodles- homever near me has them
Rolled Oats/Oatmeal- should be able to get them at your local foreign food mart. I have some too if you want them.

Recipezaar.com has a great dictionary of ingredients which lists substitutions for everything. I use it a lot here b/c htere are so many thigns you can't get!

Self-raising flour is just flour with some baking powder and salt mixed in. For 1 c flour add about 1 tsp baking powder (can get at any big grocery store here) and a little salt. Have done this a few times before.

thank you everyone for posting replies with location. My only difficulty is I don't know where these places are. As I said before I don't go shopping in the foreign markets/black markets. I have no idea where they actually are. With Walker Hill I assume that is at the hotel/casino so shouldn't be too hard to find but what about the other locations?

Hannam
Ilovecookie
Hadden
Living Galleries
and someone mentioned the froeign markets in Itaewon...is there more than one? I've been in the one just down the road from Wolfhound once it's run by Indians/Pakistanis. Is that the only one? They seemed somewhat expensive I mean $20 for a box of cereal????

When I was looking through the grocery section of the Shinsegae Department store ( at Express Bus Terminal subway stop in Seoul) I did see ricotta cheese in their gourmet cheese section. I don't remember the exact price, but it was out of this world. I haven't given in to buying it yet. I would be happy enough if I could find cottage cheese. Then I could make lasagna. As for everything else, the others are right. Some of the things I buy from any of the markets, I've even seen lasagna noodles. Turkey, I've only purchased once, from Costco. It cost an arm and a leg, but I was craving it!
Do try making your own applesauce! It's not difficult, and tastes wonderful! I took some in to school for the kids to try (2nd graders). Once they got past the look of it, they loved it!
