Seoul plans to extend additional aid to Haiti
Korea Herald wrote:
Seoul is expected to increase relief aid to quake-stricken Haiti to around $10 million, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday.

The additional amount would include the initially extended $1 million, and is to come from both private and government coffers.

Not really, Korea decided to send $10mil today, because YESTERDAY the USA said that were sending $100mil.

10 million is noteworthy. Great to see. Better late than never.

Idea Now if some of the chaebols would volunteer their considerable overseas engineering and construction teams to help in rebuilding basic infrastructure, the image of the country and its top companies would be bolstered indeed! Instead of promo ads, they could donate some labour time and demonstrate rather than just state how much of a world leader they are! Not necessary, but a great opportunity.

US GDP is 15x Koreas, how much would you expect Korea to send?

10 million is fine. It's the TIMING of it - the fact that it came after the initial paltry $1 million.

I wouldn't consider it that late anyway. Poor people are still having problems getting the aid they were promised right when it happened. Hopefully that'll change.

Actually, the engineering/construction teams are a great idea (for any country actually).

If Korea had sent 100 mil nanoseconds after the quake people would bash them for trying to "show up the world" or grab attention or trying to influence a country on the U.S.' back-doorstep or some other thing like that.

I think Korea not taking the lead is fine. The leading nations of the Western Hemisphere should be first, followed by the Francophone nations, then everyone else.

Now if they didn't send ANYTHING, that would be really cold.

The way that these budgetary decisions are made in the Korean assembly may have nothing to do with responding to the states or other countries. The wheels may just turn more slowly!

$10m is respectable. It may be more interesting to look at how much private citizens or charitable organizations in different countries are donating.

Seeing as how Korea is not in the same region and no one really looks to it for leadership regarding much of anything, 10 million is more than enough.

I think nations as well actresses, singers, etc feeling the need to advertise how much money they are sending to Haiti is crass and tasteless.
