Do any of you long-timers have renters insurance? I was thinking the other day that if there was a fire or if the ondol upstairs exploded, I would be left with nothing...and have to come up with big bucks to replace what I've lost. Do any of you have insurance? Company or agent info would be appreciated! |

When I got my last place in Korea, my ex-gf took the lease and went to the district office to register the apartment for some kind of "renters' insurance" in which the district office will insure the apartment for up to 5 million won in key money.
I think you should check into it |

I've had renter's insurance via USAA since the mid-1990s. I'm covered here, as well. It's pretty cheap, like $22 US per month. Fortunately I haven't had to make a claim here, but it's a good thing to have. When I lived in Washington DC, my apartment was broken into, and I wouldn't have been able to afford to replace my stuff without that policy. I had to file a couple of claims when I lived in California, too. I dread the idea of needing to do that from here, but I'd rather be covered than not. If you're American and connected to the military in any way (my father's a Vietnam vet), then you're probably eligible for USAA coverage; otherwise, the major companies might policies available for people who live here. |

lastat06513: Thanks for the tip. I'm also looking for the kind of insurance that would cover my personal effects (sofa, bed, fridge...) in case of fire or other damage. |

Yes you can get renter's insurance. I've got it. Do you want my agent's number? |

Yes, please.
Posting it here might be a good idea. Ask him/her if you can get a commission for every FT you send his/her way! |

I have it as well, but my wife takes care of it. All I know it's 24,000 won per month. How much and what it covers I don't know? |

I'd rather not post it here as my insurance agent is also my sister-in-law and I doubt if she'd take kindly to some weirdo who's gotten her number off the net calling her. In any case, I'll PM you her number, and anyone else who wants it, tomorrow since my husband has already gone to bed. |

If you live in an apartment or house its probably made of 90% cement. Cement doesn't burn. I have never heard of a major fire much less seen a fire anywhere in a Korean residential area. If such a fire happened it would be BBQ city as there are no fire-escapes. |

While it's true that cement doesn't burn, paint, escaping gas from a faulty line, furniture and electrical appliances DO. |

So how do you value all those family heirlooms and treasures you picked up from the side of the road? |
