I am thinking there is no way I will finish my second contract at my current Hakwon. So I am considering posible options etc and need to know a bit more about the Letter Of Release. My intention is to remain in Korea. Any info would be great or a link to the appropriate thread.

| Why do you need one? Because Korean immigration law is stacked against immigrants. If you don't have one you won't be able to work in Korea again until your current contract expires. |

Except it's not true.
As long as your current visa is CANCELED, you can go to Japan and get a new one. |

| ok ............ so i can just do a visa run of some sort then start a new job somewhere with a new visa sponsor? I am guessing that lots of people quit short of their contract and there seems to loopholes in most things here or at least Hakwon owners are not the most scupulous of people. |

And how do you suggest the OP go about cancelling his visa with no LOR. |

This is what I did in May.
Location: Airport immigration desk.
Me: Here is my ARC card, please cancel my visa.
Guy behind the desk: OK.
He scribbled USED on my visa.
I went to Japan, got a new one that afternoon, came back the next day.

Yeah, if you want a tourist visa..........no problem. Also, keep in mind that if you are not an American, you will normally have a single entry working visa.........that means, if you leave and hand in your ARC, then your visa WILL be cancelled. It may be somewhat more complicated if you are on a multiple entry visa.
If you are able to get your visa cancelled, you do not need a letter of release. If you employer does NOT cancell your visa, then you can either..........
1. Wait until it expires
2. Try to obtain a letter of release so that you can obtain another postion.
I don't think there is any written law about the LOR on the books (officially). Korea just does not want to take responsibility for the fact that it has a rather bad repuation in the ESL industry, and therefore thinks that E2 visa holders should be punished.

Sorry dude, you're wrong.
I found a job IN KOREA without a LOR. I went to the airport. I brought my new visa number thingy. I canceled old visa. I dropped off my paperwork in Japan THE SAME DAY. I got it the NEXT DAY and returned to Korea. I am American. I have always had mutiple entry visas. I never had a tourist visa. |

OP -
Why LOR? Your current employer (E2 visa) is your sponsor with immi.
a) hang in there
b) find a new job and let your new employer work things out with your old employer (buy you out - or cause you to get fired)
c) find a new job and let your new employer work things out with immi. (connections/pay off)
d) turn in your ARC on your way out - come back on a tourist visa and find a new job in another part of the country (district offices are independent) |

Well, I guess I am wrong then. But, your case is not exactly the norm. Out of curiosity, how did you do it? You dropped off your paper work the same day in Japan, right? So, how did you cancell your visa AND already have your new visa number in ONE day?
curious.

I had the visa issuance number BEFORE I LEFT KOREA.
The visa was canceled THE SAME DAY I LEFT KOREA. AT THE AIRPORT. |

RIGHT! So, how did you get the NEW visa issuance number, BEFORE you had your other visa cancelled?
