Hi there! I'm new to the forums and have a question for you seasoned travelers about Thailand: Has anyone visited Koh Chang and if so, would you recommend it over the other islands for a brief vacation of the hopefully romantic sort?
My boyfriend and I are planning to meet in Thailand for Christmas vacation. Neither of us has been before. We were originally thinking of Phucket, but my partner has some friends who visited Koh Chang a few years ago and really loved it.
We are looking for nice beaches that hopefully aren't super crowded, activities like swimming, snorkeling and hiking, and lots of good food. We don't care much about nightlife as we won't have seen each other in a few months and prefer something more quiet. We only have about 8 days, smack at the height of Christmas season. We don't have a huge budget.
Thanks in advance for any input! |

changed a lot since I first went there.
There are a few islands which are around it that are more seculded.
If money isn't a problem try this place

A little pricey but nice and secluded. |

i think you've chosen the perfect locale in thailand based on your needs. i spent a few months in thailand last year, hitting up all the islands, and koh chang was one of the most tranquil, low key places i visited. there isn't much of a nightlife to speak of ... a few pubs, some great restaurants, and one nightclub (that i knew of, anyways). the beaches were quiet, uncrowded, and low-key. i also visited phuket and it was one of my least favourite parts of thailand, mostly based on the fact that we were surrounded by the sex tourism industry. there are parts of phuket which are beautiful and not nearly as bad, but i was still much more taken with koh chang. we had some great memories there ... any more specific questions, feel free to ask! |

Darn that link crashed my machine and caused a long check disk boot up. Could had been something else in my machine not compatible with something in the site or my American machine couldn't run it as is the case with some Korean sites and a word program I have encountered. |

Thanks for the replies.
That place looks gorgeous but definitely out of our price range.
bradshaw, if you have any advice on fairly affordable places to stay or particular spots to visit, I would love to hear it! |

Hit White Sands beach. Take a stroll and speak to the various beach hut proprietors. Back in 2002 I got a beach hut for 200 baht per night. That was over the christmas and new year period. The hut was basic and the outside shower was cold, but the weather was great and the vibe top notch. In a nutshell paradise!!! |

Prices have gone up a lot since 2002.
Whitesands you will be looking at 1000B+ for something ok that time of year and most of the rest of the year.
You can slum it if you want but it's not worht it IMHO. Spend the money and enjoy yourself.
It's chaotic there at the festive season. The great unwashed and the rich Thais all descend on the place. Nightmare.

Grand Orchid is not a bad place to stay
There is a beach called Kai Bae - that has a nice beach and decent bungaloes on it. A little pricier but less undesirables than White Sands or Lonely Beach.
Had a hillside bungalo 30s walk from the beach there in 2003 for 1200 a night.

Don't forget security as well. The slightly more upmarket places have better security in place. Nothing like coming back to your bamboo shack to find it's been broken into and all your stuff pilfered. |
