i think i've figured out part of the reason koreans don't like cats!

cats must be the equivalent of NA raccoons or UK badgers!

(but, you know, cuter)

Raccoons are cute too, but that doesn't keep them from also being feral and menacing. But yeah, the feral cats here fill the exact same niche (destroying property, upsetting trash cans, potentially spreading rabies to small children who try to touch them) as raccoons. Or possums. Possums are NEVER cute.

On the bright side, they keep the rat population down.

Being rodent eaters is a better niche for cats than as house pets. The numbers of them kept alive by owners, and then dumped off, ensures that the feral population continues to rise beyond acceptable levels, causing problems in the ecosystem.

Which is why I always say that you should never take a pet unless you're willing to feed it until it dies.

I always wanted a racoon as a pet. With the new genetics research being done, maybe in my lifetime I'll be that lucky. I loved "Rascal."

I remember hearing a comedian say something once. He said that if you buy a pet, you pretty much expect to outlive and have to bury it one day. So buying a pet is like buying a minor tragedy...I approach dating the same way.
