Rank the following Asian countries in terms of being friendly/welcoming and respectful to Westerners/foreigners living in or visiting their country-if living in terms of integrating them into society-a sense of normalness and equality......
Also is it really true that Koreans are the most xenophobic of the lot-or am I just living the myth
Here they are:
Japan
Taiwan
Vietnam
Korea
China
Thailand
Philipines
Any others you want to mention-go for it..... |

All of them have their pluses and minuses if you are a foreigner... depends on your values, attitudes and on how much money you want or are willing to give. |

Not possible.
Japan - Very polite towards foreigners. You won't be integrated and become Japanese though. However, it does seem significantly more foreigners learn and use Japanese who live in Japan than other places. Japanese are extremely poor in English.
Taiwan - Heard good things about Taiwan.
Vietnam - You'll be an ATM machine in that country. This will probably be the worst. People will stick out their hands every 5 minutes hoping you'll drop $ in their palms.
Korea - I really think they really try. They'll still be shocked when you eat kimchi or use chopsticks. But overall, you aren't a walking ATM machine, and they really try hard to integrate you, even if their social skills are so poor and it comes across as more irritating than normal.
China - Chinese are between Korea and Vietnam.
Thailand - I've heard a lot of mixed. Some love it, others complain. So many foreigners that most live in the foreign bubbles and wouldn't even be aware of the locals outside of the go-go bars.
The Philippines - English is prevalant, large shopping malls, people are very friendly. Economically is the biggest difference. Otherwise, they are very western-oriented in many ways.
If I were to list them, I'd say:
The Philippines
Thailand
Taiwan
Japan
Korea
China
Vietnam |

Well, wise-ass, I haven't travelled as much as some people on these boards so they are the people who know more than me thus I wanted to hear their opinion.
Plus it's my thread and I want to keep it on track-if you don't like it don't come into it again. Thanks. |

I think it's easy to make friends and find a female partner in ALL of those countries.
If you are looking for female partners, I'd put Thailand real low on the list. More economic exchanges than female partners in my opinion, although the illusion might look like the other way. I'd also move China upwards as I heard its easy to make Chinese friends and girlfriends (although varies significantly depending on the economics of the area of China in question). Chinese are a lot like Koreans in my opinion (although opinion varies significantly on this). However, with the economic imbalance, I think Chinese can throw on the illusion a bit more, plus they are more mellow than Koreans. Cuturally still vary different for your average western to 'integrate into' however for either the Chinese or the Westerner.

wanting to add the little that I know. I think with Korea, people forget that they've only really had guest workers here for the last couple of decades. I think any xenophobic behaviour comes from ignorance and not having had that western interaction or integration. But as with their economy I expect this manner to change very quickly. Give it a couple of generations then we won't be celebrities here anymore. I think I would find the 'wallet' 'money' thing very annoying if I went to Vietnam or Thailand. Being constantly hassled would bug the hell out of me. |

Filipinos are very friendly and not racist... I lived there while growing up and I felt that I was a Filipina. It always shocked me to see my white face. They are very accepting and friendly...nice folks. Philippines has my vote (not being biased).
Thailand....friendly...but I always felt like they were wanting something.
China....you can make good friends there. It is a difficult country to live it day to day, but when you make friends, they make an effort to include you and explain their culture.
Can't really comment on the others...
and haven't been in Korea long enough (although they seem nice enough). |

This is why I want to live and work in the Philipines next year even for a lower salary. It was great there on vacation over Chusok, every1 referred to me as sir and was so polite and respectful-at times I felt like a proud white American soldier walking up and down the streets! Even though I'm from NZ
Such a contrast to Korea I couldn't believe it.
Thailand as people say is still a question mark to me so I will go there for a vacation sometime and suss it out. |
