| Can I use my Canadian debit card in Korean ATM's? Does the Korean banking system use Interact or the Plus system? Also can I do cash advances from my Visa Credit Card from an ATM? I will assume that most major stores accept visa. For those of you that have foreign credit cards, do you find it easy to make monthly payments? Will Koreans Banks accept credit card payments on behalf of Visa or Mastercard? Also, I have heard that one only needs about $600.00 Cdn to live on until they get their first pay. Is this true? |

I don't know about credit cards, but lately most convenience stores like Family Mart
have machines with 'Overseas Card' as an option. I use my foreign debit card with Visa logo
at restaurants and department stores, too. I make monthly payments back home
online, but they send a paper check.
$600 should be plenty. You may receive a relocation allowance, too. I came with $30,
but wouldn't recommend that. I tend to weasel my way out of 'situations'
(Do weasels eat moles?) |

| The ATMS are on the networks but the machines are very unreliable outside of major cities. Be prepared for surprises. Find a few reliable machines and try to use those. |

| Lots of stores will accept credit cards. I suspect many of those who won't don't pay their taxes either. |

I have a Mastercard - my wife has a Visa card. In four years we never had any problems .... if one wasn't accepted, the other was.
If you have time before you fly out, try to organise so you have both cards. |

Easily!!!
I came with $200.
Eat Korean dishes in restaurants (many are $3-to-$5), live simply, easy to get by the first month.
Accept every invite to eat out - in Korea, the one who invites, pays! Seriously. (But don't go out for drinks elsewhere after dinner. It's also tradition to alternate who pays.)
Muggings are darn near nonexistent here. Carry more cash than usual, no problem. |

Bump.
For the Brits out there; I've got a LloydsTSB Debit card. It's Visa electron but not a full Visa debit card.
Have you been trouble free using this kind of card in Korea?
