As this is my first soujourn to South Korea at the age of (gasp!) 35
I take this as a late-ish start from some of the younger members
of the forum. Whenever Steve Schertzer writes his critique towards the
EFL community in South Korea the response that he gets from the
patrons of this forum is that he is a 'loser' and that if they were teaching
EFL at Schertzers advanced age that they would 'kill themselves'

So to the younger members of the forum (maximum age 27) where do you see yourselves at 35? marriage, kids, career? What will you hoped to have gained or learned by then?

If you are 35 or older, are you where you want to be? What were your ambitions as a young 'un and did they come out to be something like?

I wanted to be world heavyweight boxing champion driving a lotus esprit but became a part time bouncer driving a blue transit van with a baseball bat in the back! Laughing

But I have changed paths at this juncture and amen to that!

Just turned 37 almost a month ago. In my younger years, I was hoping to be a rock star (Axl Rose), or with luck, a porn star.

Depending on what happens in the world in the next eleven years, I'll either be dead or alive.

Happy birthday, faster!

When I turned 35 (11 years back), I'd just finished a one-year sabbatical replacement appointment at University of Illinois-Chicago that I'd picked up after finishing my PhD and gotten a job to come do a mix of teacher training and English teaching in Korea.

I've continued on from there, doing more and more teacher training, less and less English teaching (now none), learning how interesting I find the world of EFL (as opposed to ESL) and just living/traveling abroad, doing research, getting published, and having a good life.

your route seems pretty cool to me, woland. ^^

i'm certainly interested in finding a good niche in the teaching/writing field, though i definitely would like to be based back home in vancouver, with frequent trips back to seoul.

by 35 (7 years off) i aim to have saved enough dough in korea to afford both a home and a business start-up. hopefully i'll be in either possession or pursuit of a more advanced degree, and will have published a title that has earned at least a modicum of respect within the EFL in-crowd.

hopefully i'll have also gone back to the other love i spurned when i came here -- rock and roll. the burning desire to tour and jump off high amplifiers isn't something i can fight for much longer...

I hope to be financially secure at 35. Beyond that, haven't thought much about it. What happens happens.

I'm 23.

I wanted to be employed without living hand-to-mouth every month.
