I was considering upgrading the processor on my laptop. I currently have an intel celeron 520@ 1.6GHz. I'd like to upgrade to a 2.4 or better. Would this cause any problems to my laptop?

At today's pricing, it would probably cost you almost as much to upgrade as it would to replace the laptop with a new dual core machine unless you are capable of finding an outdated chip and doing the surgery yourself.

TTom's right...sell your old lappy and buy a new one. You'll be happier in the long run.

Need more information. Brand? Model? Current specs?

Anyway, I'm sure that you'll find way more information and help about laptop related questions from web sites like www.notebookreview.com than from Dave's ESL forum.

It's a relatively new laptop, which is why I'm trying to upgrade. I just bought it pretty cheap with the intentions of boosting it a bit when I could afford to. It's an Acer Aspire 3680. 1526MB's of ram.

Eventually, I am just going to buy a new laptop. But I'm planning on going top shelf with the new one, so right now a new processor is still going to be a lot cheaper than buying a new laptop.

It is newer but it is still a crippled - entry level core2 wanna-be machine and the cost of the upgrade will rival the cost of switching to a true dual core machine. Dump the beast and step up to a mid-range (about the SAME cost as an upgrade) or wait and make the big move.

The Celeron M 520 is a single-core 65 nm CPU based on the Merom Core 2 CPU. It has half of the L2 cache (1 MiB) of the low end Core 2 Duo (2 MiB cache) and lacks both SpeedStep and Virtualization Technology. It does however feature Intel 64 technology and XD-bit support with 533 MHz FSB. January 4, 2008 marks a discontinuation of Merom-1024 CPUs
