I work at a hakwon and this will be the first time they'll have a Halloween party. Last year the idea was nixed but a co-worker and I talked the bossman into it but neither of us really know what to do. So far my gameplan is to talk about different costumes/monsters and all the Halloween accouterments, then have them make a mask so that no one feels left out during the party. At first I wanted to make paper mache masks but it seems that might be a bit too much. Another teacher is going to carve pumpkins with them, although, to me, that seems money and labor intensive. I was also going to have of the younger kids color some pumpkins, witches, etc. and then hang them around the school. So far I've only really found one website with things to color but some things are free on it, and others are not. Any suggestions? Anything you've done in the past that's worked well? Things to avoid?

Last year, our first lesson we taught the basics behind Halloween. We'd made up a little booklet with some activities, things to color, etc.

For after lunch the hagwon had bought some black lights (?) to replace a few tubes in the Kids room, then played some music like Monster Mash, MJ's Thriller and had a brief Disco. The kids loved grooving about in the dark with anything white showing up brightly.

Each teacher and their class could decorate their own classrooms ... and during the final class of the day, go 'trick or treating' ... give candy and look at the differently decorated classes.
We also taught a song called 'In the Graveyard' (To the tune of 'My Darling Clementine') .. it goes:

In the graveyard, in the graveyard
Where the moon begins to shine
Is a Doctor, crazy Doctor
and his Monster Frankenstein

Oh my monster, Oh my monster
Oh my monster Frankenstein
You are very, very scary
Don't come near me, Frankenstein.

Great fun was had by all. Hope any of these ideas are of help.

Lol, that's a cute song. My kids would go nuts over that one. Thanks for sharing it Gordana.

I'd love to try to teach them to do the Thriller dance, like those Filipino prisoners on Youtube. But I'm no good at dancing; maybe if we watch the video enough they'd get it. If we can do it I'll tape it.

I don't even know if I want to do anything major for Halloween, since it's the last day of my contract and I don't want to spend it cleaning pumpkin goo off the desks...but I think I might give out candy.
