the original and relevant OP got pulled before i could even ascertain why it was controversial.
it's relevant and important, so here's round 2. i've cut it down to a simple "yes - no" answer.

hmm, it apparently got pulled because I posted that after 3 days of research I couldn't find any decent victim support services in Korea. I also posted some useful information and an intent to provide more, waiting on mod response for this one, curious why it got pulled without an explanation. |

I say no, but there was this one married woman that made it very difficult to say . . . I had to repeat myself over and over again. |

break in and attempted rape foiled by me screaming my lungs out. The police were called, they asked if anything was taken and left |

Really? There was no investigation? No search for fingerprints, or inspection of any security camera tapes?
Did you or do you have any idea who it was? Did you try pressing the police to pursue further?
I'm not trying to be nosy- I just hate to think something like this could happen, especially in a developed country.
I'm really sorry to hear of it though. |

Yeah, pretty useless in most cases. A friend was almost killed by another guy, but police didn't charge the other guy, and when friend went to the hospital to get his stitches and staples, the cops said it was his fault, so the hospital refused to take his insurance card.
Nice that cops are so helpful. |

No investigation, no fingerprint search, no security cameras to check. No clue who it was, hadn't been in Korea very long at the time. I called the embassy to see what they could do, and their answer was nothing
As a side note, it makes me ill to see the numbers in the poll where they are right now (5 saying yes, 8 saying no) Sorry for the other people who had to deal with this crap |

I also experienced a break-in a few years ago. I woke up in the middle of the night to find a man standing at the edge of my bed. I screamed and he ran out of my apartment.
The police came and the same exact thing happened that Peppermint experienced. The two cops asked if anything was taken and what the guy looked like, then they left.
I inquired a few weeks later online about how to get a copy of the police report. I finally got an answer back saying, "Sorry about the incident. There doesn' t seem to be any report though."
Useless. And scary. |

In Ulsan we had an incident with one of our female teachers. Walking home one evening, guy copped a feel and started to harrass her. Police were called, took her statement and then the younger officer asked her if she would like to go for coffee some time. We were all gobsmacked. Only in Korea. |

Yes, but keep in mind that sexual assault is a pretty broad term. It's going to range the spectrum from being raped to being groped. So I don't think anyone should read this thread and assume that they are going to get raped if they move to Korea. Overall as a woman, I actually feel much safer in Korea then I usually did in the States, especially when I was living in DC. The statistics on sexual assault in the United States is scary stuff. Something like one in six women will be sexually assaulted in her life, but chances are the statistics are much higher because sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes. I believe the statistics for sexual assault on men in the States is one in thirty.
And maybe the original thread was pulled because of all the rape jokes. There were some really tasteless comments on the original thread. |
