I am looking at heading to Japan durring and upcoming weekend for a friends birthday (she's teaching there) but I think I remember hearing or reading that we aren't allowed to leave the country on weekends. If that is true is there anyway that my school could find out?

Of course you can leave - it's your weekend! Unless it interferes with your teaching hours?
If you have a multiple entry visa no problem, if you have a single entry then register here:

and print off your certificate and show it to immigration on your way out along with your ARC.
Have fun!

Yeah, you need permission at some schools.

Just don't tell them.

Seriously, don't do it.

Yes.

Just go.

My school bugged me about my legally/contractually allowed vacation. Where was I going, when would I get there, I had to create a damn schedule and I DO NOT travel with schedules. ALL of the K-teachers had to do it, too. It's some Big Brother Korean Gov't watching thing.

But you can bet your passport when I go to Taiwan for a weekend trip with my boyfriend in a few months, they aren't going to know about it. And if they find out about it after the fact, shrug. "Oh, I thought I had to fill one out before cause I was missing school days. I didn't know. Sorry."

My school didn't tell me anything about not leaving the country. I went to Japan over the summer break; I think you'd need at least 3 days if you don't want to be exhausted when you get back to work.

Assuming you live in Suwon, you're looking at 3 hours to Busan (KTX) and another 3 hours to Japan. Add in the wait time and you could be en route for 8 hous, one way.

But yeah, my coteachers asked where I was going and I told them I was thinking about Japan. Then they started in with "But you should explore Korea first." Then when I got back no one even bothered to ask how my trips was. So keep it in your pocket.
