Pointless. "American music"... everyone's thinking rock or blues or some shit. And damn, Sprinkstink or Dead Dude? What a choice? If this thread were a living walking, talking person, I'd kick it in the nuts.

Louis Armstrong...

If you want to know why, watch Ken Burns' "Jazz" about nine or ten times.

Gershwin, Porter, Ray Charles J.B, Hank Williams...all great, but godfathers?

No, it's pronounced Lewisss...capo del tutti capi...

Followed closely by Duke Ellington.

You people are CRAZY.
A.P. Carter walked around and FOUND AMERICAN SONGS, fellas. Songs written BY THE PEOPLE. Then they were performed an that was it.

A.P. Carter folks. Let's go home.

To the OP

Just curious as to why these two should be compared, as they share little in common, except for being pop(as opposed to classical) singers. "'Pac or Biggie?" I can understand. But these two? It's like comparing Keith Moon to rugby.

Bruce is also a sort of folk storyteller as well I guess, a patriot..

"Springsteen's lyrics often concern ordinary men and women struggling to make ends meet. His marathon shows are punctuated by his style of telling long whimsical or deeply emotional stories.
is also noted for his support of various relief and rebuilding efforts in New Jersey and elsewhere and for his response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, on which his album The Rising reflects."

Johnny Cash sold over 50 million albums in his nearly 50 year career and is generally recognized as one of the most important musicians in the history of American popular music. he was friendly with every U.S. President starting with Richard Nixon. He was least close with the last two, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, because of a personal distrust of both men and because of his declining health. He was probably closest with Jimmy Carter, who was actually a very close friend (but not related to his wife, June Carter Cash). None of these friendships were about politics, as he never particularly supported any administration but was just friendly with the nation's leaders.

I think they both are "champions" of poor or downtrodden ordinary people. they had a similar rugged image, dark style, and of course both invigorated the country/folk scene. Their music has similar themes..struggle, hardship, sorrow..etc. Both associated with politics and are..how can I put it.... symbols of America.

You can't get more American than Johnny Cash or Bruce springsteen.

Woodie? He was also great. But AP TOOK songs from Americans and popularized them. How much more important could you be?

Woodie penned songs like a mofo....and truly influencial and really great American songs. I suppose you're right too....just different types I guess.
