Nope, doesn't happen to me. I work a solid 6 hours a day in the classroom and still find that 3 office hours is not enough prep time for all the different things I got going on. I am tired. The only time a class is canceled or doesn't happen is on a red day or during 2 weeks of the year.

No waste in physical resources. In fact, there are too many school days in K-land. A whopping 238 days I figure this year. That's like 115 days more school days than in America!

Some years have even more schools days, 2008 will have more than 2007, and 2009 will have even more due to Chuseok falling on October 3rd as well as most red days falling on Saturday. Korea is workoholic, uh, I mean schooloholic!

Wow, what part of the states did you go to school in? In Florida school must be in session for a minimum of 180 days. So there's usually 183 days in the school year in case we have to cancel due to hurricanes.

Lately it seems like something is always getting in the way of teaching. Some of you may think I'm nuts to complain about this, but honestly, I prefer more structure in my position.

If I take the month from September 21 (last day before Chuseok) to October 21, taking into account the Chuseok holiday and the one on October 3, plus all the other times I have not worked (or will not in this upcoming week) due to school activities, I will have worked a grand total of six days in this whole period.

Doesn't this strike some of you as a waste of resources? Does this happen to many of you out there?

Yes. I have, for example, two days off this week because of exams at my non-contract school. Had another day off Monday because of exams at my contract school, and an afternoon off Tuesday because of the Hangeul Birthday. It has been like this since I started working here. I agree with what you say about structure....it's hard to build continuity and consistency in the classroom when one keeps getting days off.

I'd love the days off. But I have to keep coming to school - even when I'm not teaching. It's really inefficient - and de-motivating.

My classes just keep getting cancelled at the last moment (or without notice). I've taught a grand total of 11 X 40 mins classes in the last 3 weeks.
No wonder I waste so much time on Daves!

Sweet schedule!!!!

IF I miss a class for exams or events. My kids will ask the Principle if I can make up the classes.
Some of the kids in my night class wants me to teach them an extra 30 minutes.

My Wednesday classes met yesterday for the first time in 3 weeks (and some of the students were absent!), and we won't be meeting next week because of md-terms. I have delayed mid-terms for all my classes because of the rash of holidays we have enjoyed over September/October.
After next week, we will be back to the 4 day/15 hour week grind all the way till mid-December.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha.
I'm loving it.

Happens all the time at uni.

This semester:
Sept.21 quiz

Sept.24 Chuseok
Sept.25 Chuseok
Sept.26 Chuseok
Sept.27 quiz
Sept.28 quiz

Oct.1 teach
Oct.2 teach
Oct.3 holiday
Oct.4 classes cancelled - uni festival
Oct.5 classes cancelled - uni festival

Oct.8 midterm
Oct.9 midterm
Oct.10 midterm
Oct.11 midterm
Oct.12 teach

So, three actual teaching days since just before Chuseok; one each for the MW class, TTh class and WF class. And all of these days off are not including the festivals, MTs, OTs, mid-week soccer games, and field trips that the departments organize on their own. Midterms were this week, but I don't think any one class had more than 6 teaching days total since the beginning of semester (Aug 27). I don't mind the time off, certainly, but it's a ridiculous waste of time for students to be evaluated on nothing.

i think it's pretty dumb, but it gives me time to do reading for my MA. unfortunately, i'm a huge procrastinator.

and my school district was 180 days as well (Boulder, CO).
