So work really hit the nerves today. I had my director, who has a very clear case of mulitple personality disorder, all over me. I have conferences coming up and I wasn't feeling the greatest all day.

So, consequently, I decided to sit in my apartment and drink soju and beer alone. I have yet to do this in Korea. My friends are spread out worse then the Yankee's oldfielders during a routine flyball, so it was hard to find a drinking companion on this stressful evening.

Tell me I am not the only sad foul who drinks soju by themselves. I am not another Ajosshi am I?

One night of soju does not an ajosshi make.

Just as a one night stand does not a calibration device make.

Sit around during the week and watch the posts being posted on this board at 3am and up. There is your answer as to whether or not other people get drunk alone at home in Korea.

I never ever gave it a moment's thought even though (a) I have a couple bottles in my kitchen cabinet; (b) I enjoy soju and (c) I drink it regularly when Korean friends come over.

Seems shocking to me that anyone would drink it by themself.

You are either getting old or becoming an alcoholic.

i don't get the stigma to an occasional drink alone. hell a lot of people i know drink alone every night. when i used to be able to get quality beer back home, i used to do some "beer tasting" alone quite often. now i do so in the OP's case when i've had a crap day, or when i need a nightcap. i'd say making a conscious effort to ONLY drink in social company might be concealing some fear that one will become an alcoholic.

While my school management is swell, once in a while I get a bad mix of kids and they mix badly that night. Yeah, a few times I've felt like just sitting in my underwear, eating pringles off my hairy belly, drinking a couple beers.

I drink wine alone quite frequently, but never more than a glass at a time. At any rate, as long as you don't feel like you have to drink every night, I don't think it's a huge problem. You made it sound like this is just a one-off thing, so I wouldn't worry.

Exactly. It's when alcohol starts to affect your everyday life that it becomes a serious issue. Occasional drinking alone to alleviate excess stress is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, in my opinion.

I was locked out of my apartment once, my first winter in Korea, and my landlord (a new manager dude) didn't know how to open the electronic lock.

I had to spend the night in a random empty apt. a floor below, no bedding, no change of clothes, no heat. I powered down a couple bottles of the soju and passed myself out. Not my finest hour.

I'm drinking wine alone right now. Probably tomorrow too since I (hopefully) won't finish the bottle tonight.

Yeah. The funniest part was that the lock was broken because the battery was dead. That landlord was SO COOL to me the rest of the year, though. Heck, I sorta miss the dude.

Are we just keeping things clean to preserve image?

If not, I envy what a bunch of "hard cases" many claim to be.

A bottle of soju, oh dear, ....gimme a break.
