Transport Taxes, Fares Much Higher in Korea than Hong Kong
Quote:
In Korea the minimum taxi fare is W1,900 for every 2 km, which is slightly higher than the minimum HK$15 (W1,772) in Hong Kong, and taxis in Korea charge 20 percent more at night while Hong Kong taxis do not. The total cost of such a journey would be HK$107.9 (W12,734) in Hong Kong and W15,900 in Seoul, higher by W3,000.

Koreans also pay more to fly....

Why is public transportation so expensive in Korea where the per capita income is only 65 percent that of Hong Kong? Higher taxes on oil and cars are the obvious reason.

wow..thank you RR...this changes everything.... Laughing

But..how does this higher transportation cost relate to the comparative wages of Foreign teachers with undergrad degrees and full fledged professors of Korean Universities???

I await your reply with anticipation! Laughing

Why would he need to explain that?

The article has nothing to do with English teacher. This forum (General Discussion) isn't about teaching and salary but about the general living conditions of Korea. RR is simply relaying an interesting piece of information that relates to such living condition...

I was surprised to find prices SO much cheaper in HK when I was there in July. Take bread as an example.. you can get the same sausage roll (a sausage in a bread roll) for like 500 won.. in Korea it's 1,500.

I was also surprised to find that Korean taxi fare was higher than HK's.. thought they were similar or Korea was cheaper.

Yeah - I wanna go back to live in HK if we don't go back to England...

Follow RR for a bit tzechuk and it will become self-evident.... Wink

But in this case...he was posting what could be a useful piece of information...then again he has a strong and detailed history of posting things about Korea from a certain angle.....as I said..keep an eye out...or..don't! Laughing

To me RR is an amusement or a part of the tapestry here at Daves...he does amuse so it is all in good fun....

You know I could say...public transit in Korea much cheaper than in Canada....would that further help? Wink

I think this is a poor study. It looked at taxi fares. Any other fares?

I found HK buses to be more than here. Maybe about 2,000 for a normal city bus. Also, it cost me like 4,000 won to go 3 stops on the subway. And about 10,000 or so for the airport train.

Why not try reading the article?
Quote:
To travel from Hong Kong's Central district to Chai Wan (approximately 12 km), you can take the subway and be charged HK$6.80 or W803 to your Octopus Card, a widely used payment system for virtually all public transport in the city (HK$1=W118).

To go from Chai Wan to Admiralty, you can take a city bus for a minimum fare of HK$6.10. If you want to go back to the island's eastern area of Taikoo Shing in Quarry Bay (11.5 km), it would cost about HK$85 for a taxi plus HK$10 to use the tunnel, or W11,200 total.

The same distance would cost W1,000 (US$1=W917) on Korea's T-money system; for example taking the subway from Seoul's Dongdaemun World Cup Stadium Station to Isu Station (12.3km). A bus ride from Sadang Station to Gwacheon Government Complex is W900. From the Complex to Umyeonsan Tunnel, 11.5 km, costs W12,000 by taxi, not including the W2,000 for tunnel passage.

Koreans also pay more to fly. A three-day, two-night round-trip package from Hong Kong to Shanghai on Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong's biggest airline, costs HK$2,726 (W321,941). The same package on China Northern Airline is about W13,000 more. Under the "one country, two systems" policy, the 2.5 hour flight to mainland China is considered international.

For the two hours and 15 minutes flight from Incheon International Airport to Japan's Narita it costs W643,600. That means it costs over W300,000 more to fly a distance that is shorter by 23 km. The two hour Incheon-Shanghai route is also more expensive, at W560,900.

Is the story different for autos? Only imported cars drive the streets of Hong Kong since the island has no carmaker of its own. While the distance from Europe or the U.S. is more or less the same to Hong Kong and Korea, cars far are cheaper in Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, a BMW 530i with a sunroof and DVD player goes for HK$689,000 (approximately W81.37 million including registration fee), cheaper by W15 million compared to the W97.32 million the same car costs in Korea. You would save about W12 million if you bought a 750i in Hong Kong where they cost HK$1.39 million (W165 million), and W23 million on a 3500 cc Benz S350Long....

Who really cares about Hong Kong? The real comparison for most of us is with back home. In Canada, England, etc. the subway, taxis and buses are outrageously expensive. Like maybe 3-10x more?

HK is always compared to because it is considered as the most successful city in Asia.

Korea is wanting to be the hub of Asia... so may be they want to benchmark themselves against something.

1) Chai Wan, Admiralty, Taikoo Shing, and Quarry Bay are all on the island - there is no tunnel necessary.

2) Taikoo Shing isn't "in" Quarry Bay; they're neighbors to each other.

3) Taking a taxi from Taikoo Shing to Admiralty costs a lot less than HK $85.

One can also buy a used Ferrari for around US $50,000. Unfortunately, there's really nowhere to drive it to its potential.

Errr, yeah, what is this? Trying to create a price index for transportation using exotic luxury sports cars???

Fact of life in HK, my man. You can't spit in HK without hitting a Beemer or a Benz. Probably half the cars on the road are from Germany, and I'm not talking about Volkswagens.
