Tomorrow, I'm being video recorded for the purposes of a promotional video for the school I work at. I'm part of an After School Program, my principal is my employer but obviously only for visa reasons. They want to record my full 45 minute class, but my question is, should I request some sort of monetary reward for this recording? It is going to be used as a marketing tool when they try to get the program placed in other public schools. They have told me that I should go above and beyond a normal day and really try and make sure every minute is planned to the second and the kids are always having fun. So anyways, I have to obviously do a little more prep than usually for this class, but is there any grounds for me to ask for anything more?
I was going to do at first just because they asked and I don't really mind, but I've been told by like 6 friends teacher here that I should be demanding some sort of compensation. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance |

Nope I don't think so, sorry.
If it's a normal lesson and not above your usual hours then no.
I find this strange the money grabbing attitude, most people would be happy to appear in a film to promote the school.
I was told last week that my province wants to use me to video a lesson, to promote my province and gain ome extra money. It's a big province. They'll choose one of my extra classes and maybe pop in some extra very good students to help me. I choose what to teach. To me I like this, I'm helping them. I get paid well enough not to be a money grabbing b*stard. My school will think well of me, as will my Office of Education. Being in the good books is good, as the term would show. You are more likely to be cut more slack when problems arise.
If you want to be difficult then say you want what you're owed, you may not get it and then they'll think bad of you, you're not a hollywood actor, it's not as if you don't get out of bed for less a 20 000won. Plenty of korean teachers would do this for nothing, why are we so damned special that we should expect more for such little effort. Being treated equal is more important. |

| I didn't think twice at first about until other teachers started telling me I should be getting something for it. I haven't mentioned anything about it, and the fact that I actually want to be filmed and I like the idea of what it's going to be used for is fine by me. Like you suggest I think I'll just keep quiet about it and enjoy the attention. |

I'm not having a go biggpoppa. Different people like different things. A lot of the teachers here are coin operated. They don't do anything unless they're paid for it, even if it 20 seconds of work over their alloted time. Most wouldn't play football with their students because it's extra.
In some cases it can be good to listen to other teachers on SOME issues but sometimes you need to do what your gut feeling is. I think we're paid a lot for not doing too much here. So extra activities that I enjoy, or might make me more in favour with my school for not much extra effort is no problem. I like this. It's not hard. I've heard a lot about difficult teachers and how schools view them. Good books is good. And if you enjoy it then then what the hey!
Let me know how it goes? Maybe give me some tips? Makeup? |

Does any of the following below apply to you?
- The recruiter/company set you up to teach at a public school for their After School program
- Salary is usually based on a per student basis
- Because the class fee is paid by students' parents, the money is typically collected by the school
- the school CLAIMS it is illegal for them to pay a third party any money (ie. paying the recruiter or agency their fee for setting up the classes)
- so the school (or recruiter) asks you to open a bank account in your name
- the school then deposits THE ENTIRE amount paid by the parents into your new account
- the recruiter tells you to give them the bank book and the ATM card and tell them the password.
- the recruiter goes into your new account and withdraws their fee
- the money leftover is your per-student salary

i absolutely WOULD NOT do it without compensation.
it is ridiclous of them to expect you to do it for free....for starters some people might not be compfortable in a promo video so if you weren't then they'd have to pay an actor or something, this is going to make the school money...
at a previous school i worked at i was asked to do voice recording and i was paid extra....we also were part of print advertisements...and although we were not paid for them we did have the option of not being in them if we were uncomfortable with it. i did not participate...i don't want my face on some flyer years after i left.
i saw it as the school using the teachers as a freakshow for the parents to gawk at over their dunken donuts coffee and 20-30 munckins....its pathetic.
i would certainly negotiate some kind of monetary compensation |

There will be compensation. It's an after school program. The OP should get a cut of the profits. If there is a video, more parents will see it. More parents will send their little minions to the OP's schoola nd his program. More kids=more $.
Are you a part of a movie guild? Why shold you get paid extra for teaching on the school's time and money?
Play ball and when the time comes around to sign again, remind them how you helped them out. Ask for a 150k or 200k raise instead of 100k.
Act like a money grubbing pig and they won't want you around. They can hire someone who wold happily help out their place of employment.
HEY! I've been on the news a few times n the last year. I should ask my Uni to pay me extra. Wait a min? I have to say hi to my students when I walk around the town or walk home. I'm going to demand the uni pay me 50 won each time I have to talk to someone during my time.
Sound silly? |

none of this relates to me
i'm paid a monthly salary, nothing related to how many students i have or anything
its like any other hagwon contract but set up inside a public school...my company is very organized and legit...they've been awesome so far and i have no complaints...everything has been exactly as i hoped it would be if not better
