I stumbled onto this interesting site : http://www.eleceng.adelaide.edu.au/Personal/dabbott/animal.html

From the site: "In different languages what do we say to mimic animal sounds? Below is the world's biggest multilingual list. A guiding principle behind this list is to visualise a comic book, in your language, and imagine what would be written in the text balloon coming from the mouth of an animal. For languages that use a different alphabet, I have tried to transliterate the word into the English alphabet for ease of comparison. A forward slash is used to separate alternative words. Please email me at dabbott(at)eleceng.adelaide.edu.au if you have any comments, corrections or additions."

Unfortunately there is no mention of these in the Korean language.

My question to you is this; have you seen, or rather heard, any of your Korean students make animal sounds that are different from what you expected them to be?

All I know is 멍멍 for a dog (sometimes people call a dog 멍멍이) and I think 야옹 for a cat. I'm really interested in hearing others if anyone knows.

This song is to the tune of "Are You Sleeping, Brother John?"

오리는 꽥꽥, 오리는 꽥꽥,
염소 음메, 염소 음메,
돼지는 꿀꿀, 돼지는 꿀꿀,
소는 음머, 소는 음머.

A girl was telling me her dog never listened to her or did what she told it to do.

I asked her what type of dog it was

She told me it was a Yorkshire terrier

So I said there's your problem, you're speaking Korean to an English dog breed.

She looked surprised for a second and then contemplative, and then finally told me I was probably right. She would start talking to it in English from now on.

Sometimes, it doesn't matter how we mimic their sounds...its how well they understand us!

That one has always mystified me. However, Korean dogs clearly can't say "Ruff!" since it would just come out as "Lup!"
I can understand yap, woof, ruff, bow wow, or even the French "Oua! Oua!" There is one English one that's a bit strang-ee: dogs don't really say "bark" do they?

I like the original better cause it focuses on frogs.

My girlfriend always says "minyao" when she's playing with our cat. She has a bunch of words.
