|

This is a story I'm sure you've heard many times before. I finished my contract in August and returned to the US without my final pay and pension. An administrator at my university promised that the August salary would be sent in September and the pension a few weeks later. The rationale for holding the final salary was to pay the last utility bills out of it. The rationale for waiting on the pension is that it has to be applied for and takes some time. I didn't like either of these arrangements, but had heard that this had always been university policy.
Well, lo and behold, I did receive the August salary in the last week of September minus what was probably the utility witholdings. However, I still haven't received the pension even though it is almost November. Some of you are probably thinking that not enough time has elapsed yet and you may be right. The problem is that I seem to have lost all contact with the university; no one is answering their e-mail and I can't get the administrator on the phone. I don't know if this is an issue of avoidance or simply incompetence.
Anyway, here is my question. If I can't get an explaination from someone in the university and I haven't received my pension in the next month, do I have any recourse? I'm basically a nice person and want to give the benefit of the doubt, but I will not accept having money stolen from me. Do you have any suggestions on organizations I could contact, etc?
Thanks for any suggestions! |

You need to talk to "The Man", but I'm just as lazy at using the search option as you. So you'll have to sit tight until someone else comes along and tell you what to do and follows it up with a line about not being lazy and using the search option. |

When you do goto the pension office they say it can take upto three months.
My friend's took about that long, however I am not sure if university is different, as I hear they do a different pension scheme and they might not deduct your fees for the national pension fund, but rather the university one. |

Thanks for all your comments. I'm not sure if the pension is national or university-based. As you know, it's almost impossible to get information like this from your Korean employer. Anyway, I'll give them some more time and then take some kind of action. Cheers |

Hi
In answer to your question about the Pension. Here is the phone number for the office in Seoul 02-2260-1086/5
If you call them, and goto the pension office at the end of your contract, and bring the form which you have received from your employer in (I believe it was 6 weeks) they will deposit your pension money into an acct. # that you have provided. They will also provide you a number that you can call, and get an update on your file.
Hope this helps.
Take care

I looked into this a while back (actually, my wife did) and we were told that once I show my employer document (something official that says my visa has been cancelled) and my departure ticket, they can deposit it immediately.
This won't happen for about 6 weeks but I'll post again if I get more info and think it would be beneficial to the board. |
